Yarsagumba: The Himalayan Gold – Harvesting, Value, and Traditions Explained

Published on Dec. 10, 2025, 9:32 a.m.

Nepal is one of the most biodiverse countries in the world, stretching from the high Himalayan peaks to the fertile lowlands of the Terai. This dramatic range of altitude and climate supports an incredible variety of flora and fauna, including many rare medicinal plants. Among them, the most valuable and world-famous is Yarsagumba, also known as the Himalayan Gold or Himalayan Viagra.

Locally called Yarsagumba, scientifically known as Cordyceps sinensis, this unique caterpillar-fungus is found in alpine meadows between 3,000 m and 5,000 m.

What Is Yarsagumba? (Cordyceps Sinensis)

Yarsagumba is a natural fusion of animal and fungus. During winter, a parasitic fungus infects a living caterpillar beneath the soil. The fungus gradually takes over the caterpillar’s body until it dies. When summer arrives, a thin, horn-like mushroom grows out from the caterpillar’s head and emerges above the ground.

This rare phenomenon creates one of the most powerful medicinal herbs in Himalayan and Tibetan traditional medicine.

Where Yarsagumba Is Found in Nepal

Yarsagumba grows in high-altitude Himalayan regions such as:

  • Dolpo

  • Nubri (Manaslu region)

  • Mustang

  • Humla

  • Tsum Valley

  • Bajhang

  • Manang

These areas rely heavily on Yarsagumba harvesting as a major source of income.

Yarsagumba: A Lifeline for Himalayan Communities

For many remote Himalayan villages, Yarsagumba collection is the biggest economic activity of the year. From April to June, villagers leave their homes and move to high-altitude pastures for about a month to harvest it.

Families prepare food supplies, clothing, tents, and other essentials before heading up to the mountains. Children, adults, and elders—all participate in this seasonal migration.

Village Rules and Government System (Samagaun & Samdo Example)

In places like Samagaun and Samdo (Ward No.1 of Chumnubri Rural Municipality), harvesting follows strict village regulations and government rules to protect the environment and ensure fairness.

The system includes:

  • Government tax: NPR 500 per person

  • Mandatory village meetings before the season

  • Daily attendance every 4 hours to prevent illegal harvesting

  • Strict ban on collecting Yarsagumba until the official opening day

  • Elder inspection team (3–4 people) checks harvesting areas for timing

  • Rotational movement to new pastures after a few days

Villagers leave early morning, trek 2–3 hours to the harvesting grounds, collect Yarsagumba throughout the day, and return to their settlement in the evening.

How People Harvest Yarsagumba

Harvesting Yarsagumba requires precision and patience.

  • People use sharp knives or pointed tools to carefully dig the ground.

  • Soil in high altitude pastures is hard and fragile; digging with hands can damage the fungus.

  • If the Yarsagumba breaks during harvest, local buyers will reject it, because intact specimens have higher value.

  • Each person may find only a few pieces per day, depending on the season and quality of the area.

Harvesting is physically demanding and dangerous due to steep slopes, unpredictable weather, and high altitude.

Drying and Processing Yarsagumba

After collection, Yarsagumba must be dried properly to maintain quality:

  1. Clean the soil gently without breaking the body.

  2. Sun-dry or air-dry in shade for several days.

  3. Store in airtight containers to avoid moisture.

Good drying practice increases its market price.

Uses and Health Benefits of Yarsagumba

Yarsagumba is highly valued in traditional Tibetan and Chinese medicine because it:

  • Boosts the immune system

  • Improves stamina and energy

  • Supports kidney and lung health

  • Enhances testosterone and sexual vitality

  • Reduces cough and respiratory issues

  • Acts as a general strengthening tonic

It is also used to prepare alcoholic beverages, which are sold in national and international markets.

Market Value of Yarsagumba

Yarsagumba is one of the most expensive medicinal herbs in the world.
Prices depend on quality, size, and color.

International market rate:

💰 USD 15,000 to 20,000 per kilogram

Villages with higher quality specimens—such as Dolpa and Manang—receive premium prices.
Local traders invest large sums and pay significant taxes before selling to buyers in Tibet, China, and India, where the demand is extremely high.

Conclusion

Yarsagumba is not only a rare herbal treasure—it is the economic backbone of many Himalayan communities. Its mysterious natural formation, powerful medicinal value, and sky-high price make it one of the most fascinating products of Nepal’s alpine ecosystems.

From strict village rules to the challenging harvesting process, Yarsagumba represents the relationship between Himalayan people, their environment, and centuries-old traditions
