Overview

The Ganesh Himal Base Camp Trek is a 14-day combined teahouse-and-camping adventure into one of Nepal's least-trekked Himalayan basecamps, approached through the hidden Tsum Valley. You walk past sacred monasteries, hike to Gumba Lungtang nunnery, climb to Ghala Viewpoint, and then push on to the dramatic Ganesh Himal Base Camp at 4,200m - camping under glaciers in a setting visited by perhaps a few dozen trekkers each year.

Ganesh Himal (7,422m) is named for its resemblance to the Hindu elephant god. The base camp sits in a vast alpine bowl surrounded by glaciers and avalanche-streaked peaks. This trek combines spiritual depth (multiple monastery visits, nun-led pujas, ancient villages) with serious wilderness adventure (high camps, dense forests, base-camp solitude).

For trekkers seeking the road less travelled in Nepal, this is one of the most distinctive routes you can choose.

Trek guide

Trekking to a Hidden Himalayan Basecamp

Ganesh Himal Base Camp Trek is one of Nepal's underappreciated gems - an adventure into a Himalayan basecamp that sees perhaps a fraction of the foot traffic of Everest or Annapurna. Approached through the restricted Tsum Valley and culminating in a high alpine bowl beneath Ganesh Himal's 7,422m summit, this trek delivers wilderness, culture and solitude in equal measure.

About Ganesh Himal

The Ganesh Himal range consists of four major peaks named for the Hindu elephant god Ganesh, the tallest being Ganesh I (7,422m). The range forms the northern boundary of Tsum Valley and the western boundary of the Langtang region. The base camp is approached from the Tsum Valley side via Gumba Lungtang, through dense alpine forest, finishing in a glacial cirque where camp is established for one to two nights.

Combined Teahouse and Camping

The trek mixes comfortable teahouse nights through Tsum Valley with four nights of full camping - dining tent, kitchen tent, toilet tent, sleeping tents for two. A trekking chef joins the team from Gumba Lungtang upward and prepares three hot meals daily.

Permits

  • Special Restricted Area Permit for Tsum Valley
  • MCAP conservation permit
  • Minimum 2 trekkers with a licensed guide

Altitude

Highest point: 4,200m at base camp. The trek is graded strenuous because of the wilderness camping and the rapid climb above Gumba Lungtang. Acclimatization comes through gradual ascent and the rest day at Gumba Lungtang. Diamox is recommended.

Best Season

  • Spring (March-May): Rhododendrons in bloom across the Tsum Valley sections
  • Autumn (September-November): Stable, clear skies for base camp views

Camping at 4,200m in winter (December-February) is too cold for non-expedition trekkers.

Fitness

Strenuous grade. You should be very fit, comfortable with multi-day backpacking style camping at altitude, and ready for 6-8 hours of daily walking.
