Overview
The Jomsom Muktinath Trek is the classic introduction to Lower Mustang - the dry, Tibetan-flavoured valley north of the main Annapurna range. Over 8 days you fly into Jomsom (2,720m), walk to the sacred Muktinath Temple at 3,750m (one of the most important Hindu and Buddhist pilgrimage sites in Nepal), visit the apple-growing village of Marpha and the unique Bon-religion village of Lupra, and return via the dramatic Kali Gandaki valley - the deepest gorge in the world between Annapurna and Dhaulagiri.
This trek is lodge-based throughout, never tops 3,750m, and sits in the rain shadow of the main Himalaya - making it one of the few Nepal treks that runs reliably in summer (June-August) when monsoon rain washes out the other regions. Perfect for time-limited travellers, families, and trekkers who want Tibetan-Buddhist culture without the cost or commitment of an Upper Mustang expedition.

The Sacred Pilgrimage Trail
Muktinath Temple is one of the eight sacred shrines of Lord Vishnu (Char Dham of Vaishnavites) and one of the 51 Shakti Peethas of Hinduism. The Buddhists know it as Chumig Gyatsa ("Hundred Holy Waters") and consider it one of the 24 tantric sites of Guru Padmasambhava. The 108 water spouts behind the main temple are believed to wash away all sins.
The pilgrimage trail from Jomsom to Muktinath has been walked for over 2,000 years. The jeep road built in 2008 now reaches the temple, but walking remains the spiritually appropriate way to arrive.

Best Season
- Spring (March-May): Stable, warmer at altitude
- Monsoon (June-August): Rain shadow makes this possible - quieter than ever
- Autumn (September-November): Clearest visibility
Winter (December-February) is possible but Jomsom flights can cancel.
Fitness
Easy to moderate. 3-5 hours walking daily, mostly flat or gentle climbs. The Lupra-Muktinath section is the only sustained climb. Suitable for active adults with one month of cardio preparation.
