The Birthplace of the Buddha
Lumbini, in the Kapilvastu district of western Nepal's Terai, is the site of Siddhartha Gautama's birth in 563 BC. It has been one of the great Buddhist pilgrimage destinations for over 2,500 years and is preserved as a UNESCO World Heritage Site within a planned 5 km square sacred garden.
Geography
Lumbini is about 300 km from Kathmandu in the southern plains, close to the Indian border. The nearest airport is Bhairahawa (Gautam Buddha International Airport), 45 minutes from the sacred garden. Total Kathmandu - Bhairahawa flight time is around 30 minutes.
