Overview
Rara Lake is Nepal's largest and arguably most beautiful high-altitude lake - a 10 sq km mirror at 2,990m in the country's far western Mugu district. The water is the deepest cobalt blue, surrounded by pine and juniper forest, with the snow peaks of Karnali Province as a backdrop. This 7-day itinerary uses the new STOL airstrip at Talcha to deliver you to the lakeshore in two flying days, opening up a trekking destination that used to require a 10-day walk-in.
This is the easiest trek in our western Nepal catalogue. No high passes, no remote camping, no extreme altitudes. The walking is moderate, the lodges are basic but clean, and the dominant experience is the lake itself - boating on calm mornings, walking the perimeter, climbing to the Murma viewpoint at 3,410m for the wide panorama. A perfect first remote-Nepal trek for trekkers who want to see Karnali without committing to Dolpo or Humla.

Trek guide
Nepal's Largest and Highest Major Lake
Rara Lake covers 10.8 sq km at an altitude of 2,990m - making it Nepal's largest high-altitude lake. The water is up to 167m deep and the catchment is glacial-fed from the surrounding ridges. The lake sits inside Rara National Park, gazetted in 1976 and Nepal's smallest at 106 sq km.
Why So Few People Visit
Rara is logistically remote. Until 2018 you had to fly to Jumla and walk for 4-5 days each way. The new STOL airstrip at Talcha changed everything - it sits just one hour's walk from the lake itself. Even so, Rara still sees only 2,000-3,000 foreign trekkers per year (vs 50,000+ for EBC).
The Lake at Different Times of Day
- Pre-dawn: Mist on the water, mirror-flat surface, the most photogenic.
- Mid-morning: Sunlight catches the cobalt blue. Best for boat trips.
- Afternoon: Wind picks up, lake becomes choppy.
- Sunset: Pink alpenglow on the Chankheli peaks reflecting in the water.
Murma Viewpoint
3,410m, two hours' steady climb above the lake on the eastern shore. From the top you see the entire lake in one frame plus the Chankheli range to the north and the Karnali foothills to the south. The trail passes through pine and juniper forest the whole way.
Wildlife
Musk deer, Himalayan tahr, ghoral, red panda, leopard and 50+ bird species inhabit the national park. The danphe (Himalayan monal) - Nepal's national bird - is regularly seen.
Permits
- Rara National Park Entry Permit
- Mugu Restricted Area Permit (USD 90 per person)
Both arranged in Kathmandu by our office.
Best Season
- Spring (March-May): Rhododendrons in bloom around the lake, warmer
- Autumn (September-November): Clearest visibility, calmer lake surface
Monsoon is technically possible but flights are unreliable. Winter (Dec-Feb) the lake can partially freeze and lodges thin out.
Fitness
Easy. 4-5 hour walking days, mostly flat or gentle gradients. No high passes. Suitable for any reasonably active adult.
