Overview

The Annapurna Base Camp Helicopter Tour compresses the classic 7-day ABC trek into a single 2-hour helicopter flight from Pokhara. The flight lifts at sunrise from Pokhara Airport, climbs the Modi Khola valley past Chomrong and the bamboo zone, lands briefly at Annapurna Base Camp (4,130m) for the full Annapurna I, Annapurna South and Machhapuchhre amphitheatre view, then returns via the Fishtail flyover to Pokhara. Total door-to-door time is around 3 hours.

This is the right tour for travellers based in Pokhara with limited time, or for those who want the ABC view but cannot commit to the trek's altitude or duration. The ABC landing is approximately 10 minutes - long enough for photos in the natural mountain amphitheatre but not for any walking. Breakfast is served back at the heli base or your Pokhara hotel after return. Group size is capped at 5 to match the AS350 high-altitude payload.

Highlights

  • Land at Annapurna Base Camp (4,130m) inside the famous mountain amphitheatre
  • 360-degree views of Annapurna I (8,091m), Annapurna South (7,219m), Hiunchuli (6,441m), Machhapuchhre (6,993m)

  • Fly the full Modi Khola valley past Chomrong terraces and rhododendron forest
  • Phewa Lake and Pokhara Valley aerial views on the return leg

The Annapurna Sanctuary

ABC sits inside a natural high-altitude amphitheatre ringed by peaks. The view from the landing zone takes in:
- Annapurna I (8,091m) - 10th highest mountain in the world
- Annapurna South (7,219m) - looms directly above the camp
- Hiunchuli (6,441m) - the south-east corner
- Machhapuchhre (6,993m) - the iconic fishtail behind you on landing
- Tent Peak / Tharpu Chuli (5,663m) - just visible to the north

Why the ABC Landing is Brief

The ACAP authority limits helicopter landings at the sanctuary to 10 minutes per group to minimise noise and impact on trekkers walking through. The pilot keeps the engine running and passengers stay near the helicopter for photos.

Group Size Logic

5 passengers maximum on the Pokhara-ABC route. The AS350 B3e has the cleanest performance margin at 4,130m of any commercial helicopter operating in Nepal.

Weather

The Modi Khola valley clouds up by 10am most days, so all helicopter tours depart at 07:00-07:30. Late departures regularly fail to summit due to cloud cover at MBC or ABC.

Best Season

  • October-November: Stable post-monsoon weather, longest visibility window
  • March-April: Rhododendrons in bloom, clear mornings, slightly more wind
  • December-February: Coldest at base camp, occasional snow lands at ABC
  • Avoid June-September (monsoon) when cancellations are frequent

Health

  • Heart-condition or severe asthma sufferers should consult their doctor
  • Pregnant women not advised
  • Children under 5 not recommended
  • Sunglasses essential - snow glare at ABC is intense

Packing list

Clothing: Light down jacket or windproof fleece (cold at ABC even in summer), beanie, gloves, sun hat

Accessories: Sunglasses, small daypack, camera with spare battery, small water bottle, lip balm

Documents: Passport for identification

Medical: Personal medication. Diamox not required for this brief altitude exposure.

Frequently asked questions

Is the ABC landing guaranteed?

Subject to weather. If cloud covers the sanctuary the pilot will fly the lower valley and return without landing - refund or rebook applies.

How is this different from the Everest helicopter tour?

ABC is 1,500m lower than the Everest Kalapatthar landing and the flight is much shorter (2 hours total vs 4-5 hours). Lower altitude = lower AMS risk.

Can I do this same-day from Kathmandu?

Possible but extremely tight - you would need a 06:00 Kathmandu-Pokhara return flight in the same day. Most travellers spend at least one night in Pokhara.

How is the helicopter at ABC?

AS350 B3e - the same model used at Kalapatthar. Engine kept running, blades turning slowly during the 10-minute stop.

How cold at base camp?

-5 to +5C in winter, +5 to +15C in summer. Windy regardless of season.

Will I get AMS?

Mild headache possible but rare. The exposure is too brief for serious AMS.

Can I see Mount Everest from ABC?

No - Everest is 200 km east. ABC view is Annapurna and Machhapuchhre.

Can I combine with a Sarangkot sunrise tour?

Yes - we offer a combination: ABC helicopter day-1, Sarangkot sunrise day-2. Speak to the office.

Is there a photographer on board?

Not by default. We can arrange a professional photographer in the second seat as an add-on.

How safe is the ABC landing pad?

Confirmed safe landing zone used daily by multiple operators. The surface is graded gravel maintained by the sanctuary authority.
