Overview

The Nar Phu Valley and Mesokanto Pass Trek combines three of Nepal's most spectacular off-the-beaten-path objectives in a single 18-day expedition. You enter the hidden, restricted Nar and Phu valleys (opened to foreign trekkers only in 2002), cross the Kangla Pass (5,322m) into the Annapurna Circuit, walk to Tilicho Lake (4,919m - the world's highest large lake), and exit over the dramatic Mesokanto Pass (5,340m) down to Jomsom in the Kali Gandaki valley.

This is a tough, complex, deeply rewarding trek. The Nar and Phu villages are fortress-like Tibetan-Buddhist settlements with mediaeval feel - mani walls, painted chortens, the Tashi Lakhang Monastery. Tilicho Lake is a vast turquoise sheet surrounded by ice cliffs. Mesokanto is a rarely-crossed pass that gives Annapurna views from the north. Restricted-area permits required.

Trek guide

Two Valleys, Three Passes

The trek can be split into three distinct phases:

  • Phase 1 (Days 4-9): Nar Phu approach and exploration. Walk from Koto into the canyon, visit Phu (the higher village), descend to Nar (the lower village), rest day, then cross Kangla into the Annapurna Circuit.
  • Phase 2 (Days 10-13): Annapurna Circuit section. Walk via Manang and Khangsar to Tilicho Lake. Stand at the highest large lake on Earth.
  • Phase 3 (Days 14-16): Mesokanto Pass exit. Cross the rarely-walked Mesokanto La and descend to Jomsom. Camping above 4,500m.

Nar and Phu Villages

The fortified Tibetan-Buddhist villages of Nar and Phu were closed to outsiders until 2002. They retain a medieval feel - stone houses clustered around a central monastery, painted chortens, prayer flags everywhere. Phu sits at 4,240m and is famously inhospitable in winter; Nar at 4,120m is slightly more sheltered. The local language is Nar-Phu dialect of Tibetan.

Tilicho Lake

At 4,919m, Tilicho Lake is one of the highest lakes in the world (the title of "world's highest" is disputed, but it is the highest of significant size). The lake fills a glacial basin with a turquoise mineral-stained surface that reflects the surrounding ice cliffs.

The Three Passes

  • Kangla Pass (5,322m): The connection between Nar Phu and the main Annapurna Circuit. Snow-covered most of the year.
  • Tilicho Lake (4,919m): Not a pass technically, but a high-altitude day trip from Khangsar.
  • Mesokanto La (5,340m): The exit pass from Tilicho into the Kali Gandaki valley. Rarely crossed - most trekkers descend back the way they came.

Acclimatisation

Rest day at Phu (Day 7) plus a steady climb profile gives a good acclimatisation arc. The Kangla crossing on Day 11 comes after multiple nights above 4,000m. Mesokanto on Day 16 follows several days above 4,500m.

Permits

  • Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP)
  • Nar Phu Restricted Area Permit (USD 75-100 first week + USD 10-15/day after)

Restricted-area permit requires minimum two trekkers and licensed guide.

Best Season

  • Spring (April-June): Warmer pass conditions, dry
  • Autumn (September-October): Clearest views, drier

Summer (July-August) possible due to rain shadow. Winter impossible.

Frequently asked questions

How hard is this trek?

Strenuous. Three high-altitude pass crossings, mixed camping and teahouse, restricted-area logistics. Prior Himalayan trekking experience to 4,500m+ essential.

Why is Nar Phu restricted?

Political - the valleys sit close to the Tibet border and were strategically sensitive. Opened to foreign trekkers in 2002.

Can I do just Nar Phu without Mesokanto?

Yes - the 13-day Nar Phu Circuit ends at Manang and joins the standard Annapurna Circuit out via Thorong La. Speak to our office.

Are crampons needed?

Micro-spikes or instep crampons strongly recommended for Kangla and Mesokanto, especially in early spring or late autumn.

How are the lodges in Nar and Phu?

Very basic. Plywood rooms, foam pads, simple dal-bhat menu. Limited choices. We pre-book the best available.

How cold does it get?

-10 to -20C at night at the pass camps. -15C sleeping bag essential.

Can I see Tilicho Lake from the lake-edge?

Yes - the trail goes right to the lakeshore. Spectacular reflections in calm weather.

Is this safe?

Yes - politically stable, well-known route. Standard high-altitude precautions apply.

When is the best month?

October for clearest views. May for warmer pass conditions.

Wildlife?

Blue sheep common above 4,000m. Snow leopards present but rarely seen.
