Overview

The Tiji Festival Jeep Tour is the no-trek version of the classic Tiji pilgrimage - 14 days of 4x4 transport that lifts you from Pokhara to Lo Manthang in time for the three-day Tiji Buddhist liturgy in May. Tiji (formally Tenchi) is a three-day Buddhist ceremony performed at Choede Gompa inside the walled city of Lo Manthang, re-enacting the victory of Dorje Jono (a deity) over the demon Man Tam Ru. Masked dances, chanting and elaborate costumes are the visible spectacle; the underlying ritual is a Vajrayana Buddhist purification of the kingdom for the coming year.

The jeep itinerary is structured identically to the standard 14-day Mustang overland tour, but timing is locked to the Tiji dates. Festival dates rotate annually on the Tibetan lunar calendar (typically late May). This tour suits travellers who want the cultural experience but cannot or do not want to commit to 17 days of trekking at altitude. All festival-week accommodation in Lo Manthang is pre-booked - the city fills up and walk-ins struggle.

Trek guide

What Tiji Is

Tiji is a three-day Buddhist purification festival held annually at Choede Gompa in Lo Manthang. The festival re-enacts the mythological battle of Dorje Jono against the demon Man Tam Ru, who was killed and chopped into pieces to liberate Mustang from drought, pestilence and animosity. The masked dancing is performed by the resident monks in elaborate brocade costumes.

The three days break down as:
- Day 1: Tsa Chham - the demon arrives, monks dance to invoke Dorje Jono
- Day 2: Nga Chham - the battle, climaxing in the symbolic killing of the demon
- Day 3: Rha Chham - the dismemberment and burning of the demon effigy, the kingdom is cleansed

2026/2027 Dates

Tiji dates rotate on the Tibetan lunar calendar. Recent and projected dates:
- 2026: 25-27 May
- 2027: 14-16 May
- Verify with our office before booking flights

Why the Festival Matters

Tiji is one of the very few Tibetan-Buddhist purification festivals still performed in its medieval form. The masks, brocade and choreography have been passed down at Choede Gompa for over five centuries. The current chief lama at Choede is the spiritual head of the ceremony.

Frequently asked questions

When exactly is Tiji 2026/2027?

2026 dates: 25-27 May. 2027 projected: 14-16 May. Confirm with our office before booking international flights.

Are foreign visitors welcome at the festival?

Yes - respectful attendance encouraged. Photography is generally permitted outside the inner sanctum (where the principal liturgy occurs).

How crowded does Lo Manthang get?

Several thousand Mustangis attend plus 200-300 foreign visitors. Lodging is fully pre-booked and we secure beds 6 months in advance.

How does this compare to the Tiji trek?

The 17-day trek version walks in (gives proper acclimatisation and cultural arc) and out. This jeep version cuts the walking days but keeps the same festival experience.

Will I get AMS?

3,810m sleep altitude - mild AMS possible. Less exertion than the trek version reduces severity. Diamox optional.

Can I take video of the dances?

Yes - basic photography and short video are permitted. Professional film crews require a separate permit (we can arrange).

How is the food during festival week?

Teahouse menus are stretched (tourist volume increases) but staples remain available - dal-bhat, Tibetan dumplings, noodle soups.

Is the King of Lo present?

The ceremonial position has been vacant since 2008, but the royal family attends. Princess Sahasrabhuja (heir-elect's family) is often present.

Can I combine with Yartung in August?

Tiji is May, Yartung is August - separate trips. Speak to the office for a combined annual cultural tour.

Are children welcome at the festival?

Yes - the masked dances are family-friendly. Children 8+ usually enjoy the spectacle.
