Overview

The Upper Mustang Helicopter Day Tour is the only practical way to see Lo Manthang in a single day from Pokhara. The flight lifts at sunrise, climbs the Kali Gandaki gorge (the world's deepest at 5,571m below the Annapurna/Dhaulagiri peaks), refuels at Jomsom, continues north past Kagbeni, Ghami and Dhakmar to land inside the walled medieval capital of Lo Manthang (3,810m). You have 1-2 hours on the ground to walk the city, visit Thubchen monastery and meet a local resident over butter tea, then fly back to Pokhara by lunch.

This is the right trip for travellers with the budget but not the time (or the Mustang restricted-area permit fee of US$500 for the standard 10-day trek). The Upper Mustang Helicopter Tour skips the permit by being a same-day operation; ACAP entry is included. The landing in Lo Manthang is on the helipad outside the walled city - a 5-minute walk gets you into the main square.

Highlights

  • Land inside Lo Manthang (3,810m) - the walled medieval capital of the Lo Kingdom
  • Walk the cobbled streets of the 600-year-old Tibetan-style city
  • Visit Thubchen Monastery (1448 CE) with original Newari murals
  • See the painted cliffs of Dhakmar and the Chungshi cave monastery from the air
  • Fly the full Kali Gandaki gorge - the world's deepest gorge
  • See Annapurna (8,091m), Dhaulagiri (8,167m), Nilgiri and Tukuche from the air
  • Breakfast at Lo Manthang with butter tea and local snacks
  • Single-day commitment from Pokhara - no overnight Mustang stay required
  • Skip the standard US$500 Mustang restricted permit (helicopter same-day exemption)
  • Group size cap of 5 keeps the experience intimate

Lo Manthang Ground Tour

The 60-90 minute ground visit covers:
- Walk through the main gate and along the cobbled outer street
- Choede Gompa and the Royal Palace courtyard (from outside)
- Thubchen Monastery if open (entry fee separate)
- Breakfast at Amapal Resort just outside the walls

For a deeper visit (3-4 hours ground time, extra monastery visits, lunch with a Mustangi family) we offer an extended version - speak to the office.

Why the Permit Is Waived

The standard Mustang restricted permit costs US$500 for 10 days and is required for all overnight trekkers. The CAAN-approved helicopter day tour is exempt because passengers do not overnight inside the restricted zone. Verify the current regulation with our office before booking - the exemption has been in place since 2018 but can change.

Weather

The Kali Gandaki valley wind picks up around 11am. All helicopter tours fly the outbound leg early to avoid the wind on the climb. Cloud build-up in the high gorge can close the route by lunchtime.

Best Season

  • March-May: Stable weather, mild temperatures at Lo Manthang
  • September-November: Driest, clearest visibility
  • December-February: Cold at Lo Manthang (down to -10C), occasional snow closures
  • Avoid June-August (monsoon affects the Pokhara-Jomsom leg)

Health

  • Lo Manthang sits at 3,810m - mild AMS possible during the ground time
  • Heart-condition or severe asthma sufferers should consult their doctor
  • Pregnant women not advised
  • Children under 5 not recommended

Frequently asked questions

Is the Mustang permit really waived?

Yes - for same-day helicopter visitors. Overnight Mustang trekkers pay the full US$500. We will confirm current regulation at booking.

How much ground time do I actually get?

60-90 minutes is standard. We offer a 3-hour version for an additional fee that allows a deeper monastery tour and lunch with a Mustangi family.

Can I see the Tiji Festival from a helicopter day tour?

Yes - we run specially timed helicopter tours during Tiji (May). Festival dates rotate; verify with the office.

Will I get AMS at 3,810m?

Mild AMS (headache, light dizziness) possible but uncommon for a 90-minute exposure. Move slowly during the ground time.

Is the flight safe?

Yes - CAAN-certified pilots in helicopters rated for Lo Manthang altitude. Weather is the main risk; cancellations are rebooked or refunded.

What if weather closes the tour?

Pre-departure cancellations are fully refunded. Partial-flight cancellations (e.g., turn back at Jomsom) are refunded for the unflown segment.

How does this compare to a Mustang jeep tour?

The jeep tour takes 10-14 days and US$1,800-2,400. Helicopter is one day at US$1,495. Jeep gives more cultural depth and stops at multiple villages.

Can I get a private helicopter for just my group?

Yes - private charter is around US$5,500 for the full helicopter regardless of passenger count. Often cheaper for groups of 4-5 splitting the cost.

Can I include Muktinath in the same flight?

Yes - we offer a Lo Manthang + Muktinath combined day tour for an additional US$200. Speak to the office.

What is Lo Manthang like in winter?

Brutally cold (-10 to -20C at night) and quiet - most locals migrate south. The helicopter tour still runs weather permitting but the city feels empty.
