Overview
The Upper Mustang Helicopter Day Tour is the only practical way to see Lo Manthang in a single day from Pokhara. The flight lifts at sunrise, climbs the Kali Gandaki gorge (the world's deepest at 5,571m below the Annapurna/Dhaulagiri peaks), refuels at Jomsom, continues north past Kagbeni, Ghami and Dhakmar to land inside the walled medieval capital of Lo Manthang (3,810m). You have 1-2 hours on the ground to walk the city, visit Thubchen monastery and meet a local resident over butter tea, then fly back to Pokhara by lunch.
This is the right trip for travellers with the budget but not the time (or the Mustang restricted-area permit fee of US$500 for the standard 10-day trek). The Upper Mustang Helicopter Tour skips the permit by being a same-day operation; ACAP entry is included. The landing in Lo Manthang is on the helipad outside the walled city - a 5-minute walk gets you into the main square.

Why the Permit Is Waived
The standard Mustang restricted permit costs US$500 for 10 days and is required for all overnight trekkers. The CAAN-approved helicopter day tour is exempt because passengers do not overnight inside the restricted zone. Verify the current regulation with our office before booking - the exemption has been in place since 2018 but can change.
Weather
The Kali Gandaki valley wind picks up around 11am. All helicopter tours fly the outbound leg early to avoid the wind on the climb. Cloud build-up in the high gorge can close the route by lunchtime.
Best Season
- March-May: Stable weather, mild temperatures at Lo Manthang
- September-November: Driest, clearest visibility
- December-February: Cold at Lo Manthang (down to -10C), occasional snow closures
- Avoid June-August (monsoon affects the Pokhara-Jomsom leg)
Health
- Lo Manthang sits at 3,810m - mild AMS possible during the ground time
- Heart-condition or severe asthma sufferers should consult their doctor
- Pregnant women not advised
- Children under 5 not recommended
