Overview
The Upper Mustang Overland Jeep Tour is the non-trekking alternative to the classic 17-day Lo Manthang trek - 14 days end-to-end using 4x4 jeeps on the new Upper Mustang road network that opened in stages between 2015 and 2020. The tour covers the same major sites (Lo Manthang, Chungshi Cave Monastery, Dhakmar, Ghami, Luri Gompa, Muktinath) but trades walking days for 3-4 hour daily jeep rides. The 4x4 has the advantage of reaching outlying villages like Tange that even the long trek skips.
This is the right option for travellers who want the Upper Mustang cultural experience but cannot or do not want to commit to the trek's altitude exposure and walking days. Suitable for ages 8-80 and accommodating travellers with mild mobility issues. The jeep covers each daily stage in around half the time of walking, leaving more time for monastery visits and longer stops in Lo Manthang. The required Upper Mustang Restricted Area Permit (US$500) still applies because the route involves overnight stays in the restricted zone.
Highlights
- Reach Lo Manthang in 2 days from Pokhara via the new Mustang road
- Visit Tange, Charang, Yara and Luri Gompa - villages most trekkers skip
- Stand inside Lo Gyakar Gompa - the 8th-century cave monastery
- See Chosar sky caves - hand-cut Buddhist meditation cells in cliffs
- Walk the cobbled streets of Lo Manthang (walled medieval capital)
- Visit Muktinath Temple (108 spouts and eternal flame)
- Tatopani hot springs en route
- 4x4 transportation throughout - no daily walking commitment
- Suitable for travellers who cannot trek
- Same cultural sites as the trek in roughly half the days

Why the Jeep Tour Exists
The Mustang road network was nominally complete by 2020. What was previously a 7-day walk from Jomsom to Lo Manthang is now a 1-day jeep drive. This has opened Upper Mustang to a much wider demographic - older travellers, those with mobility limitations, and visitors with shorter time windows. The trek itself remains popular for the foot-paced cultural arc.
Key Sites Covered
- Muktinath (3,710m) - Hindu-Buddhist pilgrimage temple with 108 water spouts
- Kagbeni (2,810m) - Tibetan-style gateway village
- Chungshi Cave Monastery - Padmasambhava's meditation cave
- Dhakmar - the painted red cliffs
- Ghami - Mani wall longest in Nepal (300m)
- Lo Manthang (3,810m) - walled medieval capital
- Chosar caves - cliff sky-caves above Lo Manthang
- Luri Gompa - 14th-century cave monastery
- Lo Gyakar Gompa - 8th-century Mahayana monastery
- Tatopani - natural hot springs
Road Conditions
The Mustang road is unpaved gravel and dirt throughout. Monsoon (June-August) brings occasional washouts. November-April is typically clean. The jeep is a Toyota Land Cruiser or Mahindra Bolero - all with 4x4 and high clearance.
Permits
- ACAP entry
- TIMS card
- Upper Mustang Restricted Area Permit - US$500 for 10 days
Restricted permit is required because overnight stays in the restricted zone occur regardless of transport mode.
Best Season
- March-May: Mild temperatures, dry roads, pre-tourist-rush
- September-November: Best visibility, driest
- December-February: Cold (-10 to -20C at night in Lo Manthang) but quiet
- Avoid June-August (road washouts possible)
Fitness
Easy to moderate. Daily activity is 3-4 hours of jeep riding plus short walks at each cultural site (15-45 minutes). Suitable for older travellers, families with children 8+, and travellers with mild mobility limitations.
