Overview

The Dhulikhel to Panauti Day Hike via Namobuddha is a classic eastern Kathmandu Valley walk that strings together three different worlds in a single day: the old Newari hill town of Dhulikhel, the Tibetan Buddhist pilgrimage ridge of Namobuddha and the medieval temple town of Panauti. The walking is gentle, the views of the Himalayas open up as soon as you climb out of Dhulikhel, and the cultural payoff is some of the richest you can get in 24 hours from Kathmandu.

It is the right pick for travellers who want one good walking day with culture, food and history packed in - and not much climbing.

Highlights

  • Sunrise mountain panorama from Dhulikhel
  • Forest and ridgeline walk via Kavre Bhanjyang
  • Thrangu Tashi Yangtse Monastery at Namobuddha
  • Old stupa marking the legendary site of the Buddha-and-tigress story
  • Descent through Shankhu and Sunthan to Panauti
  • Forty-plus shrines and temples in Panauti
  • Newari wood architecture and stone-water spouts
  • Easy gradient with mostly downhill on the second half
  • Family-friendly and suitable for first-time hikers
  • Year-round trail with shade
