Four Sites, One Story
Kathmandu Valley contains seven UNESCO sites; this day tour covers the four most central and most representative - two Buddhist stupas and two Hindu/Newari complexes - in a single sensible loop.
Geography
All four sites sit within central Kathmandu and Patan, within a 30-40 minute drive of each other. The tour starts at Swayambhu on the western edge of the city and finishes at Boudhanath in the northeast.
The Four Stops
Swayambhu Stupa
The oldest stupa in the valley, set on a forested hill. Famous for the painted Buddha eyes on the central stupa, the resident monkeys and the steep 365-step staircase to the top. Excellent valley views.
Patan Durbar Square
The royal square of the old Newari kingdom of Patan. Home to some of Nepal's finest pagoda temples and stone sculpture, with the excellent Patan Museum housed in the old palace explaining bronze and stone casting techniques.
Pashupatinath Temple
The most important Shiva temple in Nepal, on the banks of the Bagmati. Non-Hindus cannot enter the main shrine but the opposite riverbank offers a respectful view of the ghats and cremation rituals.
Boudhanath Stupa
One of the largest stupas anywhere, surrounded by Tibetan monasteries and the centre of Kathmandu's Tibetan and Sherpa community. Rooftop cafes around the stupa are a great spot for late afternoon tea.
Permits
Site entry fees are not included (see exclusions for the standard rates).
Altitude
Maximum 1,350m at Swayambhu. No altitude considerations.
Best Season
Year-round. Late autumn (October-November) and spring (March-April) give the cleanest sky and best photos.
Fitness
Easy. Some climbing at Swayambhu (the 365 steps); otherwise mostly flat walking.
Tour Flow
8:00 AM hotel pickup. Swayambhu (mid-morning, before the heat). Drive to Patan (30-40 minutes) and visit the Durbar Square and the Patan Museum. Lunch break (own arrangement). Pashupatinath in the early afternoon (good light on the temple roofs). Finish at Boudhanath in the late afternoon for tea on a rooftop overlooking the stupa. Hotel drop-off by 4:00 PM.
