Overview
Experience the magic of Tsum Valley without the long approach trek. This 10-day Helicopter Trip to Tsum Valley flies you in just 35-40 minutes from Kathmandu directly to Upper Tsum's hidden village of Chhokang Paro at 3,045m - a journey that would normally take five days on foot.
Once in the valley, you walk the most scenic and spiritually significant sections of Upper Tsum at your own pace - Milarepa Cave, Mu Gompa, Rachen Nunnery and the Choshong Viewpoint. After fully exploring the sacred highlands, you walk down through Lower Tsum and exit by jeep to Kathmandu, gaining the full Tsum Valley story compressed into a luxurious 10-day itinerary.
This is the perfect option for time-pressed travellers, photographers chasing peak conditions, and trekkers who prefer to spend their days in the high country rather than the approach.

A Faster Path into Nepal's Sacred Hidden Valley
For trekkers limited on time but unwilling to compromise on authentic Himalayan experience, the helicopter route into Tsum Valley is unique in Nepal. Few hidden valleys in the country are accessible by helicopter at all - and Upper Tsum is one of the most spectacular landings, dropping you straight into a 3,000m+ Tibetan-Buddhist village ringed by Ganesh Himal.
Why a Helicopter Trip?
The standard 12-day Tsum Valley trek begins at Machhakhola (870m) and takes five days of walking just to reach Choekangparo/Chhokang Paro. By flying in, you arrive at 3,045m in under an hour with all your energy preserved for the most rewarding upper sections - Mu Gompa, the Choshong Viewpoint and the ancient monasteries. Your walking days remain authentic, but you skip the road-following days at the start.
The Flight Itself
The helicopter (typically an AS350 B3 or Bell 407) takes off from Kathmandu domestic airport around 7-9 AM, weather permitting. The flight crosses the Trishuli river system and follows the Budhi Gandaki north, passing Ganesh Himal at eye level. Landing at Chhokang Paro is on a designated helipad arranged with the local community.
Acclimatization and Altitude
Flying directly to 3,045m carries some altitude risk. We mitigate this with a mandatory acclimatization day at Chhokang Paro before climbing higher, plus gradual progress to Mu Gompa over three days. Guests sometimes feel mild headache or fatigue on day 1 - drink water, rest, and inform your guide. Diamox prophylactic dosing is recommended; consult your doctor.
Cultural Itinerary
Even with the helicopter approach, this trip is rich in culture. You visit:
- Bio-Hotel Khamasangbo in Chhokang Paro (Namgyal's family lodge)
- Gaden Gompa monastery
- Milarepa Cave (the sacred meditation cave of the 11th-century yogi)
- Rachen Gompa (a major nunnery of the region)
- Lar Mani Chuekhor (prayer wheel pavilion)
- Mu Gompa (the ancient monastery at 3,800m)
- Multiple village settlements during the walk-out
Permits
The flight does not exempt you from permits. We arrange:
- Special Restricted Area Permit for Tsum Valley
- Manaslu Conservation Area Project (MCAP) permit
A minimum of two trekkers and a licensed Nepali guide are required by law.
Best Season
The helicopter operates year-round but visibility and landing reliability are best in:
- March-May (spring) - clear mornings, rhododendrons in bloom
- September-November (autumn) - the best photographic season
In December-February the helicopter can fly but landing conditions sometimes prevent takeoff; flights may be delayed by a day or two if weather closes in.
Photography
Bring a fast lens for the chopper window shots, a polarizer for monastery exteriors, and a tripod if you want night-sky exposures - Tsum Valley has some of the darkest skies in Nepal.
Walking Days
While shorter than the full trek, you still walk 4-6 hours daily for five days. Moderate fitness is required.
