Overview
The Namobuddha to Balthali Day Hike pairs two of Kathmandu Valley's most photogenic cultural sites in one easy day on foot. You start at Thrangu Tashi Yangtse Monastery on the Namobuddha ridge, drop through farmland into the sleepy village of Balthali for a homemade Newari lunch, then finish in the medieval Newari town of Panauti, where rivers, temples and a small palace square sit largely as they were 500 years ago.
It is a perfect short escape from Kathmandu - cultural, scenic and gentle on the legs - and a great taster for travellers who only have a single free day on either side of a longer trek.

A Cultural Day Out East of Kathmandu
Namobuddha, Balthali and Panauti sit in Kavrepalanchowk district, southeast of Kathmandu Valley. The trio works beautifully as a single loop: a Buddhist pilgrimage ridge at one end, an unspoiled Tamang and Brahmin farming village in the middle, and one of Nepal's oldest Newari towns at the other.
Geography
The drive from Kathmandu to Namobuddha covers about 42 km via Banepa and Dhulikhel. From the monastery at roughly 1,750m the trail descends through pine and oak forest and terraced fields to Balthali (around 1,400m). A second short walk drops to Khopasi before you finish the day in Panauti at roughly 1,400m.
What You See
- Thrangu Tashi Yangtse Monastery (the modern home of the Namobuddha story of the prince and the tigress)
- Hilltop stupa and prayer-flag viewpoint
- Rural Tamang and Brahmin farms around Balthali
- Newari architecture, stone water spouts and 15th-century temples in Panauti
- Confluence of the Roshi and Punyamati rivers (a Hindu pilgrimage site)

Suggested Day Flow
A typical morning starts with a 7:30 AM hotel pickup and a 1.5-hour drive to Namobuddha.
