Overview

The Phulchowki Day Hike climbs the highest peak on the Kathmandu Valley rim - 2,765m above the southeastern edge of the valley. The name comes from "phul" (flower) and "chowki" (tollhouse) and the trail lives up to it: rhododendron and orchid forest, a Buddhist gompa near the top, a Hindu shrine on the summit and 360-degree views of the Himalayas from Everest to the Annapurnas on a clear day.

It is the most demanding day-hike option from Kathmandu and a popular legs-and-lungs warm-up for anyone heading on to a Himalayan trek.

Frequently asked questions

How hard is the hike?

One of the most demanding day hikes from Kathmandu - 1,300m of climb in a day.

Is it suitable for first-time hikers?

Not ideal - try Nagarkot or Chisopani first. Phulchowki is best for hikers who walk regularly.

Will I see mountains?

October to March is the best window. The summit gives one of the widest Himalayan panoramas around Kathmandu.

Is it good for birdwatching?

Yes - over 300 bird species recorded. Bring binoculars.

When do rhododendrons bloom?

Mid-March to mid-April is the peak window.

Are there teashops on the trail?

Very few; carry your own water and lunch.

Can I drive up instead?

A rough road climbs most of the way; we can arrange a jeep-up / walk-down option for less fit visitors. Ask in advance.

What is the army checkpost about?

A working communications tower on the summit; visitors register a passport copy before entering.

Is altitude a concern?

2,765m is high enough that you may feel a little out of breath but no real altitude-sickness risk.
