The Sankhu to Nagarkot Day Hike starts in the historic Newari town of Sankhu in the northeast of Kathmandu Valley and climbs through terraced farmland and rhododendron-pine forest to the Nagarkot ridge at 2,175m, ending with a sunset view over the Himalayas. It is a beginner-friendly trail with rich cultural variety - Newari town start, Tamang and Brahmin villages in the middle, sunset and panorama at the end.
A great pick for travellers who want a quieter alternative to the Chisopani or Nagarkot-Changunarayan trails and a chance to see authentic village life on the way up.

Newari Town to Mountain Ridge
Sankhu is one of the oldest towns in Kathmandu Valley, a Newari trade settlement with a famous Bajrayogini temple complex on its northern edge. The trail to Nagarkot heads north up the valley wall through some of the most authentic village landscape close to the capital.
Geography
Sankhu sits at around 1,400m in the northeast of Kathmandu Valley. The trail follows stone-paved village paths and forest tracks up to Nagarkot ridge at 2,175m. Total walking distance is around 10-12 km with about 800m of elevation gain.

Fitness
Easy to moderate (Level 1-2). About 7-8 hours of activity day total including the drive. The walk itself is around 4-5 hours mostly on good trail.
Trail Description
7:00 AM pickup. 45-60 minute drive to Sankhu (around 25 km). Walk through the old town and join the trail north toward Lapsiphedi. The path climbs steadily through farmland and forest. Lunch around midday at a hill teahouse. Continue up to the Nagarkot ridge, arriving in time for late-afternoon panorama and sunset. 1.5-hour drive back to Kathmandu.
