Overview

The Serang Gompa Hidden Valley Trek - also known as the Beyul Trek - is a 13-day pilgrimage into one of Nepal's most spiritually charged but rarely-visited monastic sanctuaries. Located deep in the Manaslu region's Kutang corridor, Serang Gompa is a Beyul - a "hidden valley" blessed by Guru Padmasambhava as a refuge from the troubles of the world.

This is not a high-altitude expedition. It is a contemplative trek into a remote monastery where monks and nuns still live in centuries-old daily prayer cycles, where holy water from Guru Padmasambhava is said to bless and heal, and where the surrounding mountains feel close enough to touch.

For trekkers seeking a deeper Himalayan experience focused on culture, monastic life, and spiritual retreat rather than altitude or distance, the Serang Gompa Trek is unique in Nepal.

Trek guide

A Pilgrimage to Nepal's Hidden Buddhist Sanctuary

The word "Beyul" comes from Tibetan and refers to a sacred hidden valley blessed by Guru Padmasambhava (Guru Rinpoche) - a place where the chaos of the world cannot enter. Serang Gompa is one of the most revered Beyuls in the Nepal Himalayas, sitting deep in the Manaslu region's Kutang corridor and accessible only via a multi-day trek crossing dramatic suspension bridges and steep mountain trails.

What is Serang Gompa?

Serang Gompa is an active Buddhist monastery housing monks and nuns who maintain centuries-old prayer cycles. The gompa sits at 3,100m in a dramatic mountain bowl with steep cliff walls and live avalanches visible from the courtyard. Pilgrims come from across Nepal and Tibet to receive blessings, meditate in the surrounding caves, and visit the Guru Padmasambhava holy water site nearby.

Why this trek is different

While other Manaslu treks aim for the Larke Pass and the circuit's high-altitude drama, the Serang Gompa Trek is about cultural and spiritual immersion. The highest point is just 3,200m, and the daily walking is moderate. The reward is days inside the gompa - attending pujas, meditating with monks, sharing meals, and witnessing the rhythms of monastic life.

Geography

The trek follows the Manaslu corridor from Sotikhola, passing through Lower Manaslu (Kutang region) villages including Bhi, Deng, Rana and Pewa. The Kutang people speak Kukey - a language described as "the language stolen from all parts of the world" - which has fascinating origins and grammatical quirks. From Bhi village, a side valley leads up to Serang Gompa through forests and over high suspension bridges.

Permits

  • Special Restricted Area Permit for Manaslu region
  • MCAP conservation permit
  • Minimum 2 trekkers and a licensed Nepali guide

Altitude and Fitness

Highest point: 3,200m. Moderate altitude, lower risk of altitude sickness than circuit-style treks. You should be able to walk 5-7 hours per day on uneven terrain. Two to three months of cardio training is recommended.

Best Season

  • Spring (March-May): Comfortable temperatures, rhododendrons in bloom
  • Autumn (September-November): Stable weather, clear skies

Winter is too cold and many lodges close. Monsoon brings leeches and landslides.

What to Expect at the Gompa

Days at Serang Gompa start before dawn with monk-led pujas at the main shrine. Trekkers are welcome to attend as respectful observers (no photography during ceremonies). After the morning service, monks and nuns invite visitors to share tsampa porridge and butter tea. The afternoon is free for meditation, exploring the meditation caves nearby, or hiking to the Guru Padmasambhava holy water.

Cultural Etiquette

  • Always remove shoes before entering the gompa
  • Walk clockwise around chortens and mani walls
  • Do not point feet at the altar or monks
  • Ask permission before photographing people or sacred objects
  • A small donation to the monastery is customary and warmly received

Frequently asked questions

Is this trek physically easier than the Manaslu Circuit?

Yes. The highest point is 3,200m vs 5,163m on the circuit. Daily walking distances are comparable but altitude exposure is much lower.

Do I need to be Buddhist to do this trek?

No. Trekkers of all faiths and none are warmly welcomed at the gompa. Respect for monastic etiquette is the only requirement.

Will I really be able to attend monastery pujas?

Yes, thanks to our long relationship with Serang Gompa. Trekkers attend as respectful observers and are often invited to share tea and food with monks afterward.

Can I extend my stay at the gompa for a meditation retreat?

Yes - contact us to arrange a multi-day silent retreat. Donations to the monastery support this.

How cold does it get?

Around 0 to -5°C at night at Serang Gompa in shoulder seasons. Manageable with a -10°C sleeping bag.

Is the trail dangerous?

The suspension bridges to Serang Gompa are dramatic but well-maintained. The trail itself has steep sections that require care. Our guides know the safe lines.

Will I have Wi-Fi?

Yes - included in the package where available, including at Serang Gompa.

What should I donate to the monastery?

USD 10-30 is standard and warmly received. Cash directly to the monk's office, not to individuals.

Can vegetarians eat well?

Yes - Kutang and Nubri cuisine is largely vegetarian with dal bhat, momos, vegetable curries and noodles.

Is photography allowed inside the gompa?

Outside and in courtyard areas, yes - but ask permission. Never photograph during pujas or sacred ceremonies without explicit permission.
