Trek guide

The Valley of Glaciers

Langtang Valley sits just south of the Tibetan border in Rasuwa district, formed by the Langtang Khola glacial river system. The valley climbs from subtropical forests at 1,500m to high alpine glaciers at 5,000m+ over a single day's drive and 5-6 days of walking. Langtang Lirung (7,234m) dominates the upper valley.

Earthquake Recovery

The April 2015 earthquake triggered a massive landslide that buried the village of Langtang and killed hundreds. The community has rebuilt with international solidarity - and trekking dollars directly support the recovery. Visiting Langtang today is both a powerful trekking experience and a meaningful act of community support.

Geography and Route

The trek starts from Syabrubesi (1,550m), 6-7 hours by jeep from Kathmandu. The route follows the Langtang Khola upstream through Lama Hotel, rebuilt Langtang Village, and Kyanjin Gompa - the highest village in the valley. Two summit day hikes (Kyanjin Ri and Tserko Ri) provide the trek's highest views.

Kyanjin Ri vs Tserko Ri

  • Kyanjin Ri (4,773m) - 4-5 hour round trip from Kyanjin Gompa. Easier and shorter.
  • Tserko Ri (4,984m) - 6-7 hour round trip. Higher, harder, more rewarding.

Both offer 360-degree Langtang panoramas.

Permits

  • Langtang National Park permit
  • TIMS card

Frequently asked questions

Is the Langtang trek safe after the earthquake?

Yes - the trails and lodges have been fully rebuilt. The new Langtang Village is on safer ground. Aftershocks are rare.

How does Langtang compare to Annapurna and Everest?

Less crowded than both, shorter and easier to access from Kathmandu, with excellent mountain views. A great choice for trekkers wanting depth without remoteness.

Can I just do one of the summit hikes?

Yes - many trekkers do only Kyanjin Ri (easier). Tserko Ri is the more demanding option.

Is altitude sickness a concern?

Mild risk above 4,000m. Diamox recommended. Communicate any symptoms to your guide.

What is the food like?

Standard teahouse menu plus excellent yak cheese from the Kyanjin factory.

How are the rebuilt lodges?

Modern, clean, often better than pre-earthquake. Good twin-share rooms, shared bathrooms, hot meals.

How cold does it get?

-5 to -10°C at Kyanjin Gompa in shoulder seasons. Manageable with proper down kit.

Can children join?

Children aged 10+ with hiking experience handle it well.

Will I see red pandas?

They are present in the forests around Lama Hotel but sightings are rare. Early morning is best.

Can the trek be extended?

Yes - combine with Gosainkunda Lake (16-20 days) or Tamang Heritage Trail. Contact us.
