Overview

The Everest Base Camp Helicopter Day Tour is the fastest way to see the Khumbu Icefall, stand at 5,644m and be back in your Kathmandu hotel for lunch. The tour departs Kathmandu at first light, refuels at Lukla, flies up the Dudh Koshi corridor past Namche and Tengboche, lands briefly at Kalapatthar (5,644m) for the Everest summit view, then drops back down to a breakfast stop at the Everest View Hotel in Syangboche (3,860m) before returning to Kathmandu. Total airtime is around 4-5 hours and the door-to-door schedule fits inside a single morning.

This is the trip for travellers who want the EBC view without the 12-day trek. Group size is capped at five (the AS350 maximum) and the operator switches you between aircraft at Lukla to manage the altitude transition. Oxygen is available in the cabin. The Kalapatthar landing is approximately 8-10 minutes (the maximum the engine and crew can manage safely at that altitude) - long enough for photos but not for any walking around.

Highlights

  • Land at Kalapatthar (5,644m) - the classic Everest summit view
  • Flyover Everest Base Camp (5,364m) and the Khumbu Icefall

  • Fly the full Dudh Koshi corridor past Namche, Tengboche and Dingboche

Why the Kalapatthar Landing is Brief

At 5,644m the engine performance margin is narrow and the available oxygen for crew and passengers is reduced. CAAN regulations limit landings at this altitude to roughly 10 minutes total. Passengers do not deplane for walking - photos are taken from beside the helicopter.

Group Size Logic

The AS350 carries 5 passengers from Kathmandu to Lukla. From Lukla up the valley the helicopter shuttles in two trips of 2-3 passengers each to stay within the high-altitude payload limit. The Syangboche breakfast and final return run all 5 together.

Oxygen

Emergency oxygen cylinders are mounted in the cabin and the pilot will distribute on request. Some clients use oxygen briefly at Kalapatthar; most do not need it.

Weather

Kathmandu-Lukla and Lukla-Kalapatthar both have separate weather windows. The most reliable months are October-November and February-April. Monsoon (June-August) flights frequently cancel due to cloud cover above Lukla. Cancelled flights are rebooked next-day or refunded.

Best Season

  • October-November: Clearest mountain visibility, stable weather
  • February-April: Cold but very clear, slight wind risk
  • December-January: Coldest, some weather days lost
  • Avoid June-August (monsoon)

Health

Recommended:
- Not suitable for those with heart conditions, severe high blood pressure or recent surgery
- Pregnant women not advised
- Children under 5 not recommended (oxygen mask sizing issue)
- Bring sunglasses and warm jacket for the Kalapatthar stop (-5 to -15C even in summer)

Packing list

Clothing: Warm jacket (fleece + windproof shell minimum), beanie, gloves, sun hat for the Syangboche stop

Accessories: Sunglasses (essential for snow glare), small daypack, camera with spare battery (cold drains them fast), small water bottle, lip balm

Documents: Passport (carried in case of emergency identification)

Medical: Personal medication. Diamox not required for this duration of high-altitude exposure.

Frequently asked questions

Is this safe?

Yes - operated by CAAN-certified high-altitude pilots in helicopters rated for the altitude. The main residual risk is weather.

What if weather closes the tour?

We attempt the flight; if cancelled mid-tour you are refunded for the unflown segment or rebooked for a later day. Pre-departure cancellations are fully refunded.

Will I get altitude sickness?

Mild symptoms (headache, slight breathlessness) occur in around 30% of passengers at Kalapatthar but resolve immediately on descent to Syangboche.

How is the helicopter heated?

The cabin has a heater but the Kalapatthar stop will be cold - dress warmly.

Can I walk around at Kalapatthar?

No - the engine is kept running and passengers stay within 5m of the helicopter for photos.

What if I am older or have a heart condition?

Get medical clearance from your doctor before booking. The brief high-altitude exposure is real even though you are not exerting yourself.

Can I land at EBC instead of Kalapatthar?

No - EBC itself has no helicopter landing zone (the moraine surface is too uneven). Kalapatthar is the standard high-landing spot.

How many people on the helicopter at Kalapatthar?

2-3 maximum - the rest of the group waits at Lukla and shuttles separately to stay within payload limits.

What is the seating like at Kalapatthar?

One window seat per passenger guaranteed. The pilot rotates the helicopter to give everyone the Everest view photograph.

Can I combine this with a Pokhara visit?

Yes - we can add a Pokhara return flight or a Sarangkot sunrise tour the next day. Speak to the office.
