Overview

If Everest Base Camp is Khumbu's headline act, Gokyo Lakes is the quieter, more beautiful side stage. This 12-day trek follows the same Lukla-Namche-Sagarmatha National Park entry as EBC, then turns west at Sanasa into the Dudh Koshi tributary valley. You walk past yak pastures and rhododendron groves to Gokyo - a tiny Sherpa settlement sitting on the edge of a turquoise glacial lake at 4,790m.

The view from Gokyo Ri (5,357m), reached pre-dawn on the morning of Day 8, is widely considered the best single Everest panorama in Nepal: four 8,000m peaks (Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu) in one frame, with the full sweep of the Ngozumpa glacier - Nepal's longest - directly below. Fewer crowds, prettier scenery, slightly lower altitude than EBC. For many returning Khumbu trekkers, Gokyo becomes the favourite.

Highlights

  • Climb Gokyo Ri (5,357m) for the iconic four-8,000m-peak sunrise panorama
  • Camp on the edge of the turquoise third Gokyo lake (Dudh Pokhari)
  • Walk the lateral moraine of the Ngozumpa Glacier - Nepal's longest at 36 km
  • Visit all six sacred glacial lakes of Gokyo - pilgrimage site for Hindus and Buddhists
  • Quieter than EBC - half the trekker traffic, same Everest views
  • Acclimatisation day in Namche Bazaar with optional Hotel Everest View hike
  • Pass through traditional Sherpa villages of Dole, Machhermo and Phortse Tanga
  • Spot yaks, blue sheep and Himalayan tahr on the alpine pastures
  • All permits, flights and porters arranged in advance
  • Short enough for a two-week holiday window

Trek guide

The Most Photogenic Trek in Khumbu

The Gokyo valley sits in the rain shadow of Cho Oyu (8,201m) - the sixth highest peak in the world. Six glacial lakes step up the valley floor, each a different shade of turquoise depending on the time of day and silt content. The third lake, Dudh Pokhari, is the largest and the one the village clings to.

Gokyo Ri and the Four 8,000m View

Gokyo Ri is a steep 600m climb above the village - usually two hours up. The summit gives you the celebrated four-8,000m panorama: Everest (8,848m), Lhotse (8,516m), Makalu (8,485m) and Cho Oyu (8,201m). This is the single most photographed view in the Khumbu after the south face of Everest from Kala Patthar. Many trekkers and photographers consider it the more aesthetically complete shot - you see all four peaks at once, not just one.

The Ngozumpa Glacier

Beneath the second and third lakes runs the Ngozumpa - Nepal's longest glacier at 36 km. It is debris-covered (the surface looks like a rocky moonscape) but constantly moving. Walking the moraine on rest day exploration hikes is one of the trek's most surreal experiences.

Acclimatisation

The standard rest day at Namche Bazaar (3,440m) with a hike to the Hotel Everest View (3,880m) sets up the acclimatisation arc. Gokyo itself sits at 4,790m and the climb of Gokyo Ri (5,357m) on Day 8 is a sleep-low-climb-high day - you return to Gokyo to sleep.

Permits

  • Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit
  • Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Permit

Both issued in Kathmandu before you fly.

Best Season

  • Spring (March-May): Warmer, rhododendrons bloom up to Phortse Tanga, slightly hazier views
  • Autumn (September-November): Coldest at altitude but the clearest visibility of the year

We do not run this trek in monsoon (Jun-Aug). Winter is possible for experienced trekkers but the Gokyo lodges thin out and the lakes freeze over.

Fitness

Moderate to moderately strenuous. You should be able to walk 5-6 hours daily over uneven terrain for 10 consecutive days. 2-3 months of cardio and stair work is the typical preparation. The Gokyo Ri ascent is steep but short.

Frequently asked questions

How does this compare to EBC?

Gokyo is quieter, more scenic and roughly the same altitude (4,790m vs 5,170m at Gorakshep). Gokyo Ri at 5,357m gives a broader Everest panorama than Kala Patthar. EBC has the iconic destination factor. Many trekkers do EBC first and Gokyo on their return visit.

Is it easier than EBC?

Marginally. Two fewer days, slightly lower top sleeping altitude. Still classified moderately strenuous - high-altitude trekking is high-altitude trekking.

Can I combine Gokyo with EBC?

Yes, via the Cho La pass (4,420m). That trip is 16 days - speak to our office about the EBC + Gokyo via Cho La combo.

Are the Gokyo lakes really turquoise?

Yes - the colour comes from suspended glacial silt (rock flour) and is most intense in autumn after the monsoon has settled. Photographers love it.

How crowded are the lodges?

Quieter than EBC but Gokyo village has limited beds (maybe 8 lodges total). October and April need advance booking - which we handle.

Is the Gokyo Ri climb safe?

Yes, technically straightforward but very steep. Pre-dawn start with headlamps. Take it slow and the view is the reward.

How fit do I need to be?

Moderately. Capable of 5-6 hour days at altitude. 2-3 months of cardio and leg work prepares most people well.

Best season?

Late September to mid-November (autumn) for the clearest lakes and best light. April for the rhododendrons.

Can solo travellers join?

Yes. A licensed guide is now mandatory in Sagarmatha National Park. We pair solo travellers into our small group departures.

How cold does it get at Gokyo?

Pre-dawn at the lake in November: -10 to -15C. Daytime walking: comfortable in a fleece. -15C sleeping bag is sufficient.
