Overview

The Everest View Panorama Trek is a short and accessible journey into the heart of the Khumbu that delivers iconic Himalayan vistas without forcing you to push toward extreme altitudes. In just one week you fly into Lukla, walk the legendary Sherpa highway through Phakding and Namche Bazaar, and finish at Tengboche Monastery (3,870m) — a sacred high-ridge gompa surrounded by Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Ama Dablam and a wall of other six-thousanders.

This is the perfect option for trekkers who are short on time, travelling with non-acclimatised family members, or simply want the cultural and scenic essence of the Everest region without the rigours of the full Base Camp itinerary. Daily walking sits at a comfortable 5-6 hours, lodges along the route are some of the best-equipped in Nepal, and the route follows the same historic trail used by the earliest expeditions to Mount Everest.

Itinerary

Day 1

Fly Kathmandu to Lukla, Trek to Phakding (2,640m)

⏱ 40-minute flight + ~3 hours walking 🍽 Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

The adventure opens with the scenic flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, gliding past terraced hillsides and distant peaks. After meeting your porter you follow the Dudh Koshi downstream on a gentle descent for around three hours to Phakding, a small riverside village that serves as the standard first overnight in the Khumbu.

Day 2

Phakding to Namche Bazaar (3,440m)

⏱ 5-6 hours walking 🍽 Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

The trail follows the Dudh Koshi valley, crossing the river several times on high suspension bridges. Beyond Larja Dobhan you enter Sagarmatha National Park and tackle the long climb toward Namche Bazaar — a busy, colourful Sherpa town with shops, bakeries and your first proper view of the high peaks.

Day 3

Acclimatisation Day at Namche Bazaar

🍽 Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

A scheduled rest day to help your body settle into the altitude. An early morning climb above town opens up sunrise views of Everest, Lhotse and Ama Dablam before clouds roll in. The afternoon is good for exploring the Sherpa Museum, browsing local shops, or simply lingering over coffee with mountain views.

Day 4

Namche to Tengboche (3,870m)

⏱ 5-6 hours walking 🍽 Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

A relatively gentle ridge walk leads to Phunki Tenga, where the path drops to the river before the steady climb to Tengboche. The monastery here is the spiritual heart of the Khumbu — visit the prayer hall in the late afternoon and watch the alpenglow fire up the surrounding giants.

Day 5

Tengboche to Monjo (2,860m)

⏱ ~7 hours walking 🍽 Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Descend off the Tengboche ridge with a short steep climb to Sanasa above the Imja Khola. The trail then undulates back toward Namche for a quick break before continuing down past the Hillary Suspension Bridge over the Dudh Koshi to Monjo, just outside the national park gate.

Day 6

Monjo to Lukla (2,828m)

⏱ 5-6 hours walking 🍽 Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Continue downvalley through a string of Sherpa villages, crossing the Thado Koshi tributary on the way. The final 45 minutes is a short climb back into Lukla. Your guide will reconfirm flight tickets while you settle into your lodge and toast the trek.

Day 7

Fly Back to Kathmandu (1,350m)

⏱ 40-minute flight

An early morning transfer to Lukla airstrip for the scenic flight back to Kathmandu. After hotel check-in the rest of the day is yours to explore Thamel or Boudhanath, ending with a farewell dinner with the team.

Trek guide

A Short Window into the Khumbu

The Everest View Panorama Trek is built around one simple idea — bring trekkers within close, photographable range of Mount Everest and its neighbours, but stop before altitude becomes a real obstacle. Tengboche, the high point at 3,870m, is well below the danger zone, which means the walk is enjoyable for first-timers, families and travellers with limited holiday days.

The Khumbu Heartland

This trek covers the most culturally rich stretch of the Khumbu — the corridor between Lukla and Tengboche. You overnight in Phakding, climb to Namche Bazaar (the unofficial Sherpa capital), and then traverse a high forested ridge to Tengboche, home to the region's most important Buddhist monastery. Every village along the route is a working Sherpa settlement, not a tourist creation.

Geography and Route

The flight from Kathmandu drops you onto the famous sloped runway at Lukla (2,840m). From there the trail follows the milky-blue Dudh Koshi river upstream, crossing it on long suspension bridges festooned with prayer flags. After Namche the route climbs onto a panoramic shelf before dropping briefly and ascending again to the Tengboche ridge. The descent retraces the same corridor back to Lukla.

Permits

  • Sagarmatha National Park entry permit
  • Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality permit

Both are arranged for you by our Kathmandu office before departure.

Altitude and Acclimatisation

The high point is 3,870m at Tengboche, with one structured rest day at Namche Bazaar (3,440m). Risk of acute mountain sickness is low compared with EBC, but altitude awareness still matters. Hydrate well, walk steadily and tell your guide if you feel unwell.

Best Season

  • Spring (March-May): Warmer temperatures and rhododendrons flowering on the lower trail
  • Autumn (September-November): Crisp visibility and the most reliable mountain views

Winter is also possible thanks to the modest altitude, although Lukla flights are more weather-affected. Monsoon should generally be avoided.

Fitness

Easy to moderate. Most reasonably active travellers complete this trek comfortably. A few weeks of walking, jogging or stair training is enough preparation for most people.

Packing list

Accessories: 25-30L daypack, 60L duffel for the porter, sleeping bag (rentable in Kathmandu), trekking poles, headlamp, sunglasses with UV protection, refillable water bottle, water purification, power bank, universal adapter

Frequently asked questions

Is this trek suitable for beginners?

Yes — it is one of the most beginner-friendly options in the Everest region. Reasonable fitness is enough and no prior trekking experience is required.

How high do we actually go?

The maximum sleeping altitude is 3,870m at Tengboche. That is high enough for spectacular views but low enough to keep altitude risk modest.

Can the itinerary be customised?

Absolutely. You can extend rest days, add a side trip to the Everest View Hotel or Khumjung village, or stretch the itinerary if you prefer a slower pace.

Do I need a guide?

A licensed guide is strongly recommended (and required by current Nepal regulations) for safety, cultural context and managing the famously unpredictable Lukla flights.

Which permits are needed?

The Sagarmatha National Park permit and the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality permit. We arrange both for you.

How likely is altitude sickness?

The risk is much lower than on EBC because of the modest top altitude, but symptoms are still possible above 3,000m. Gradual ascent, plenty of water and good food keep risk minimal.

What is the accommodation like?

Simple but comfortable Sherpa lodges, with twin-share rooms, common dining areas and good local food. Hot showers and Wi-Fi are typically available for a small fee.

Is Wi-Fi available on the trail?

Yes, in most villages — usually via Everest Link or lodge Wi-Fi. Coverage is more limited at higher elevations.

Can the trek run year-round?

It can, but spring and autumn give the most stable weather and clearest views. Winter is doable for hardier trekkers; monsoon is best avoided.

How does this compare with the full EBC trek?

Same culture, similar landscapes, fewer days, lower altitude. If your goal is the iconic basecamp itself, choose EBC. If your goal is Sherpa villages and Himalayan panoramas in a week, this trek is ideal.
