Overview
The Kathmandu Mountain Flight is the 60-minute sunrise scenic flight that lifts at first light, climbs to 25,000 feet and runs eastward along the entire Nepal Himalaya - from Langtang in the west through Gauri Shankar, Numbur, Karyolung, Cho Oyu, Gyachung Kang, Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse and Makalu - then turns around and runs the same line back to Kathmandu. Every seat is a window seat, every passenger gets a cockpit visit during the flight to see the mountains over the pilot's shoulder, and a hostess names each peak as it passes.
This is the simplest Himalayan experience in Nepal. No altitude exposure (you are pressurised), no fitness required, no weather forecast to worry about (the flight either runs or is refunded), no overnight commitment. Door-to-door is around 2.5 hours from your hotel and you are back in time for breakfast. The aircraft is a small turboprop (typically a Beechcraft 1900 or ATR-72) with 18-30 seats.

Cockpit Visit
CAAN regulations allow scheduled-flight passengers into the cockpit briefly during cruise. Each passenger gets 30-60 seconds in the jump seat next to the pilot - the most direct mountain view available on the flight. The hostess organises the rotation.
Why "Window Seat Guaranteed"
The aircraft is configured single-row (1-1 seating on the Beechcraft 1900, or 1-2 on the ATR-72). Every passenger has a window. Mountains are visible only on the north side of the aircraft so the airline rotates which side faces the mountains on each leg.
Weather Dependencies
- Cloud base must be above 25,000 feet over the Himalaya for usable views
- Visibility horizon must be 50+ km
- Aircraft will lift in marginal weather; if mountains are obscured the airline either refunds or rebooks
- Monsoon (June-August) cancellations are common
Best Season
- October-November: Highest visibility, most stable air
- February-May: Cold but clear, dry-season window
- December-January: Coldest, occasional smog over Kathmandu valley delays departure
- Avoid June-August (monsoon)
Health
Suitable for almost all passengers:
- Ages 2-90 commonly fly
- Wheelchair-accessible (boarding ramp at Kathmandu)
- Pressurised cabin - no altitude exposure
- Pregnancy: airlines permit up to 36 weeks with doctor's note
Packing list
Clothing: Whatever you would wear to breakfast - the cabin is heated
Accessories: Camera, smartphone, sunglasses (helpful for the bright snow glare), small water bottle
Documents: Passport for airline check-in
Medical: Personal medication. Ear-pressure equalising for sensitive ears (chewing gum works fine)
