Overview

Lobuche East at 6,119m is the most technical of Nepal's classic three trekking peaks (Mera, Island, Lobuche). It is a small but proud summit pyramid that rises directly above the famous Khumbu trail to Everest Base Camp - if you have walked towards Lobuche village you have already looked up at it. Unlike Island or Mera, Lobuche East involves real mixed ground: snow slopes up to 45 degrees, exposed traverses, multiple fixed-rope pitches, and a long summit ridge with consequential drop-offs.

Our 14-day itinerary builds in the full Khumbu acclimatisation sequence - Namche, Tengboche, Dingboche - plus an EBC and Kala Patthar pre-summit climb to consolidate altitude tolerance. Two nights at high camp (5,300m) make for a shorter, more humane summit day. This is a serious climb suitable for trekkers with prior mountaineering or strong 6,000m-equivalent fitness.

Trek guide

Two Summits, One Standard Climb

Lobuche has two summits - East (6,119m) and West (6,145m). West is rarely climbed (it is graded as an alpine 4 expedition peak). East is the NMA trekking peak and what nearly all commercial groups attempt. When operators say "Lobuche Peak" they mean Lobuche East.

The Climb in Plain Terms

Summit day from high camp at 5,300m looks like:
- 1-2am start.
- 90-min steep scree climb to the start of the snow.
- Cramp on. Climb the lower glacier on a gentle snow slope (roped together).
- First fixed-rope pitch: 45-50m on a 45-degree ice slope.
- Long ridge traverse with exposure on both sides.
- Second fixed-rope pitch on the summit cone.
- Final 30m to the summit.
- Descend by abseiling the fixed lines on a figure-8 or ATC.

Total summit day: 9-11 hours from high camp.

Why Lobuche Is Harder Than Island

  • More fixed-rope pitches (2 vs 1)
  • Steeper ice (45-50 vs 35-45 degrees)
  • Exposed summit ridge with drop-offs both sides (Island is a single knife-edge - shorter)
  • Longer total summit-day time
  • Mixed rock + ice on the lower section (Island is all snow above crampon point)

Acclimatisation

The killer feature of our itinerary is the EBC + Kala Patthar pre-summit segment. By the time you start the climb you have already slept at 4,940m and climbed to 5,545m. Most operators skip this and have higher failure rates. We do not.

Permits

  • Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit
  • Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Permit
  • Lobuche Peak Climbing Permit (NMA)

Best Season

  • Spring (April-May): Warmer, stable, busier

Frequently asked questions

Is Lobuche harder than Island Peak?

Yes - more fixed-rope pitches, steeper ice, an exposed summit ridge and a longer total summit-day time. Prior trekking-peak experience or strong mountaineering background is recommended.

What is the success rate?

Roughly 70-80% on our itinerary. The two main causes of failure are inadequate acclimatisation and weather on the exposed summit ridge.

Do I need climbing experience?

Prior climbing experience (alpine 1-2 or PD- equivalent) or a previous trekking peak (Island, Mera) is strongly recommended. The technical demands are significant.

Why include EBC in the itinerary?

Because acclimatising to 5,545m via Kala Patthar before the climb dramatically increases summit success rates. It also gives you the iconic EBC experience as a bonus.

Lobuche vs Mera vs Island Peak?

Mera = highest, easiest, longest. Island = mid altitude, mid technical. Lobuche = lowest altitude, most technical. Climbers seeking technical experience choose Lobuche.

How cold is summit night?

-20 to -25C with windchill. Heavy down jacket and insulated mittens essential.

How long is summit day?

11-12 hours from high camp - the longest of the three classic trekking peaks.

Do I need my own mountaineering boots?

Yes - B2 or B3 boots. Rentable in Kathmandu for USD 8-10 per day.

What about the Khumbu Icefall view?

The summit gives a dramatic eye-level view of Pumori and Lingtren, and looks down at the Khumbu glacier - one of the best Khumbu panoramas of any peak.

Can I combine Lobuche with Three Passes?

Yes - we run a 22-day combination. Speak to the office.
