Overview

The Salleri-to-Everest Base Camp Trek is the longer, lower, more gradual alternative to the standard Lukla EBC route. Instead of flying into the notoriously weather-affected Lukla airstrip, you take a 10-12 hour jeep transfer to Salleri (2,400m) in the Solu region and walk the next four days up through Sherpa heartland - Phaplu, Ringmu, Taksindu Pass, Nunthala, Kharikhola - before joining the main EBC trail at Phakding below Lukla. The trek covers the lower Solu valley that most EBC trekkers miss entirely.

The payoff is twofold: better acclimatisation (gradual climb from 2,400m to 5,644m over 8 days versus 2,800m to 5,644m over 6 days on the standard route), and a richer cultural experience through Solu - the southern, lower Sherpa region where most of the famous climbing Sherpa families are from. You only fly the return leg from Lukla, halving the weather-cancellation risk. Total cost is also lower because the inbound flight is replaced with a jeep ride.

Highlights

  • Avoid the inbound Lukla flight - use a jeep transfer to Salleri instead
  • Walk the lower Solu region that standard EBC trekkers fly over
  • Cross Taksindu Pass (3,071m) and Lamjura La en route
  • Visit Chiwong and Junbesi monasteries - cradle of Sherpa Buddhism
  • Better acclimatisation arc - 8 days from trailhead to EBC versus 6 on the Lukla route
  • See Ama Dablam (6,812m), Nuptse (7,855m), Lhotse (8,516m) and Everest (8,848m) up close
  • Stand at Kalapatthar (5,644m) for the classic Everest sunrise view
  • Visit Everest Base Camp (5,364m) at the foot of the Khumbu Icefall
  • Half the weather-cancellation risk - only one Lukla flight required (return)
  • Substantially cheaper than the standard fly-in EBC itinerary

Solu vs Khumbu

The Sherpa region splits into two:
- Solu (lower) - 2,000-3,000m, agricultural, the cradle of Sherpa Buddhism, monasteries like Chiwong and Junbesi
- Khumbu (upper) - 3,000-5,500m, the climbing-Sherpa heartland, Namche-EBC corridor

Standard EBC trekkers see only Khumbu. Salleri-route trekkers see both.

Key Cultural Stops

  • Phaplu (2,360m) - main Solu town with the Sir Edmund Hillary hospital
  • Chiwong Gompa - perched on a cliff above Phaplu, famous for the autumn Mani Rimdu festival
  • Junbesi (2,700m) - one of the most photogenic Sherpa villages in Solu
  • Thubten Choling Monastery - 300 nuns and monks practising under the late Tulshig Rinpoche

Acclimatisation Arc

Frequently asked questions

Why not just fly to Lukla?

Lukla flights are cancelled or delayed roughly 25-30% of trekking days. Skipping the inbound flight removes that risk and adds a richer cultural arc.

Is the jeep ride to Salleri brutal?

10-12 hours on mountain roads. Travel sickness pills recommended. The first half is paved, the second half is rough dirt.

Can I still fly back from Lukla?

Yes - the return Lukla flight is included. We use the outbound jeep + inbound flight model to halve the weather risk.

Is the route well-marked?

Yes - the Salleri-to-Lukla section has a continuous teahouse trail and is well-signposted.

How do teahouses compare on the Solu side?

Slightly more basic and cheaper than Khumbu teahouses. Hot showers and Wi-Fi widely available in larger villages.

Will I get AMS?

Lower risk than the Lukla route thanks to the gradual climb. We carry pulse oximetry and Diamox.

Can children do this trek?

Children 12+ with hiking experience generally do well. The 12-day walking section is the main commitment.

How crowded is the Solu section?

Very quiet - perhaps 5% of the foot traffic compared to the Lukla-Namche section.

Can I add Gokyo or Three Passes?

Yes - we can extend the itinerary to 18 or 21 days adding the Gokyo Lakes or Three Passes loop. Speak to the office.

What if my return Lukla flight is cancelled?

We provide a free helicopter shuttle to Manthali (Ramechhap) with a road transfer to Kathmandu, or accommodation in Lukla until the flight runs. Covered in the trek cost.
