Dolpo Trekking Guide 2026: Routes, Permits and Practical Tips

Dolpo is the trek for travellers who have done Everest and Annapurna and want something truer. Tucked into a remote corner of western Nepal between the Dhaulagiri massif and the Tibetan plateau, this trans-Himalayan rain-shadow region was made famous by Peter Matthiessen's 1979 book The Snow Leopard and Éric Valli's 1999 film Himalaya. It is one of the most isolated, culturally intact and visually striking places in the country, and it asks more of you than most other Nepali treks. Here is our 2026 planning guide from senior expedition guides who have walked nearly every Dolpo route.

Where Dolpo is, and why it matters

Dolpo sits in Nepal's far west, in Dolpa district. The Upper Dolpo region is geographically and culturally Tibetan, with ancient Bon (pre-Buddhist) and Tibetan Buddhist monasteries, Tibetan-speaking villagers, and a population that still moves seasonally with yak herds. The Lower Dolpo region is more accessible, centred on the turquoise Phoksundo Lake. Both sit inside Shey Phoksundo National Park, Nepal's largest national park at 3,555 km².

Tourism is light. Roads are minimal. Mobile signal is non-existent above Juphal. This is a place where you genuinely disconnect.

How to get there

Two access methods:

Air (recommended)

• Fly Kathmandu to Nepalgunj (1 hour)
• Connect to Juphal on a 35-minute STOL flight
• Begin trekking immediately

This is the only viable option for tight schedules and is what we use for almost every Dolpo trip.

Overland

• Bus Kathmandu to Nepalgunj (12-14 hours)
• 4x4 jeep through Jajarkot, Radi and Tripurakot (2 days)
• Begin trekking at Tripurakot or further

Cheaper but adds three days each way and becomes impassable during monsoon. We only run overland Dolpo trips for guests with serious time and budget flexibility.

Permits and costs

Dolpo is a controlled area with high permit fees. Minimum two trekkers required and only registered agencies can apply.

Upper Dolpo:

• Upper Dolpo Restricted Permit: USD 500 for the first 10 days, USD 50 per day thereafter
• Shey Phoksundo National Park entry: NPR 3,000 (USD 30) foreigners, NPR 1,500 SAARC, NPR 100 Nepali
• Monastery fees: NPR 200-400 per site

Lower Dolpo:

• Lower Dolpo Restricted Permit: USD 20 per week
• Shey Phoksundo National Park entry: same rates
• Monastery fees: same rates

Approximate full trip costs (Upper Dolpo, 24 days):

Total budget for a full Upper Dolpo trek lands USD 2,500-4,500 depending on duration, group size and accommodation style.

The five main route options

1. Upper and Lower Dolpo Circuit (24 days) — the comprehensive clockwise route across three 5,000+ m passes (Nangda La 5,240 m, Shey La 5,100 m, Chhoila La 5,040 m), combining both regions for full cultural and landscape immersion.

2. Lower Dolpo Circuit (17 days) — shorter alternative crossing Numa La (5,310 m) and Baga La (5,070 m), suited to fit trekkers wanting a high-altitude experience without the full 24 days.

3. Inner Dolpo Circuit (25 days) — an even more remote variation for experienced trekkers, combining Upper and Lower regions and visiting villages like Dho Tarap and Saldang.

4. Phoksundo Tea House Trek (9-11 days) — the only viable tea-house route in Dolpo, centred on Phoksundo Lake. The accessible entry point to the region.

5. Extended traverses — Upper Dolpo to Jomsom (linking to Mustang, 25-30 days) or Dolpo to Rara Lake via Kagmara Pass (25 days). Both are full expedition undertakings.

What you will see

Shey Gompa. An 11th-century monastery at 4,200 m on the south side of Crystal Mountain. Matthiessen wintered there. Still active, still home to Buddhist monks, still wildly remote.

Crystal Mountain. Dolpo's holiest peak, famous for the crystal-bearing veins in its rock. During July-August locals walk a clockwise kora (pilgrim circuit) around it for spiritual purification.

Phoksundo Lake. Nepal's deepest lake at 3,611 m, a startling turquoise colour caused by mineral deposits and depth. The waterfall draining the lake is the highest in Nepal.

Bon religion sites. Samling and Tshowa monasteries practice the pre-Buddhist Bon tradition, including the distinctive anti-clockwise circumambulation. Few places in the world still preserve living Bon practice.

Remote villages. Ringmo, Tinje, Dho Tarap, Saldang, Yangze — communities of a few dozen households each, maintaining centuries-old Tibetan agricultural and pastoral lifestyles.

Wildlife. Shey Phoksundo is one of the best places in Nepal to see (or at least look for) snow leopards, blue sheep, Himalayan tahr, Himalayan vultures and lammergeiers.

Accommodation realities

Camping is the dominant mode in Upper Dolpo. We bring a full crew: senior guide, assistant guide, cook, kitchen helper, pack-animal handlers and yaks/mules carrying tents, food and equipment. We set up a dining tent at each camp, prepare three hot meals a day, and serve hot drinks on demand. This is genuine expedition trekking.

Teahouses exist only on the Phoksundo route. Lodges are basic: shared bathrooms, simple twin rooms, menus of potato, rice, noodles and seasonal vegetables. Plenty of variety in breakfast (cereals, eggs, bread).

Best season

• Mid-April to May: spring opening, occasional late snow, green emerging
• June to August: counterintuitively, one of the best windows. Rain shadow keeps Dolpo dry while the rest of Nepal floods. Flights can be weather-delayed.
• Late September to mid-November: peak season, clearest views, biggest crowds (still very few people)
• Mid-November to mid-March: avoid. Passes block with snow, flights cancel, villages depopulate to lower altitudes.

Ten practical tips from our Dolpo guides

1. Go now. Dolpo's traditional culture is shifting fast. The valleys of 2030 will look different from those of 2026.

2. Pack comprehensive cold-weather gear. Four-season sleeping bag, down jacket, insulated boots, balaclava — Dolpo nights are genuinely cold even in autumn.

3. Eat well and hydrate aggressively. At Dolpo altitudes, dehydration mimics altitude sickness and you cannot afford to be guessing.

4. Build flexibility into the itinerary. Weather closes the Juphal airstrip without warning. We always recommend 2-3 buffer days at the back end.

5. Use a reputable local agency with proven Dolpo experience. This is not a region to test a new operator.

6. Get travel insurance with helicopter evacuation cover of at least USD 100,000. Helicopters do operate in Dolpo, but they are expensive.

7. Never skip the permits. Checkposts at Juphal, Ringmo and beyond are strict. Fines and deportation are real.

8. Carry copies of passport, visa, insurance and permits everywhere. Originals stay with the lead guide.

9. Hire a Dolpo-experienced guide. Local navigation knowledge matters more here than on any other commercial trek in Nepal.

10. Tip your crew well. 10-15% of crew wages is standard. They will not ask, but they will remember. These are the people getting you safely across remote 5,000 m passes.

Difficulty and fitness

Dolpo demands more than EBC, Annapurna or even Manaslu. The combination of high altitude (multiple 5,000+ m passes), long daily walking distances (often 6-8 hours), limited evacuation options, full camping logistics and trans-Himalayan dryness adds up to genuine expedition work. We require previous high-altitude trekking experience (above 4,500 m) for our Upper Dolpo trips, and three to four months of serious cardio and load-carry training before departure.

Why Dolpo if you have done Nepal before

EBC, ABC and Manaslu are spectacular but increasingly commercial. Dolpo is genuinely remote — you can walk for days without seeing another foreign trekker. Cultural depth is unmatched. The landscape is unlike anything else in the country. And the rare wildlife — snow leopards, blue sheep, lammergeiers — give the trek a wildlife dimension that the major routes do not match.

It is a privilege rather than a holiday.
