Rolwaling & Lapche Valley Trek: Gaurishankar's Hidden Routes

A complete guide to trekking Rolwaling and Lapche valleys in the Gaurishankar region, including routes, permits, Tsho Rolpa lake and itineraries.

Rolwaling & Lapche Valley Trek: Gaurishankar's Hidden Routes

Rolwaling & Lapche Valley Trek: Gaurishankar's Hidden Routes

Between the well-known Helambu and Khumbu regions lies one of Nepal's most underrated trekking areas: the Gaurishankar Conservation Area, home to the Rolwaling and Lapche valleys. This is where you go for an unspoiled, low-traffic, deeply authentic Himalayan experience, sacred peaks, the secluded glacial lake of Tsho Rolpa, Sherpa villages, and high passes that link straight into the Everest region. It draws trekkers, mountaineers and pilgrims alike, especially followers of the Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism. As a Nepali-owned team, this is exactly the kind of region we love to share before the crowds arrive.

How to get there

The valleys sit in Dolakha district, Bagmati Province, between Helambu to the west and Khumbu to the east. Charikot Bazaar is the main gateway. From Kathmandu you can take a private vehicle or a local bus from Ratna Park bus station. Chhetchhet is the usual starting point for the Tashi Lapcha and Rolwaling routes, while Lama Bagar serves the Lapche and Bigu Gompa treks. Note that ongoing road construction between Lumnang and Lama Bagar can affect trail conditions.

Permits and fees

These are restricted areas, so permits are essential and some require a minimum group of two trekkers arranged through an authorised agency.

  • Gaurishankar Conservation Area Permit (GCAP): NPR 3,000 per person
  • Special restricted permit for Rolwaling/Lapchi: USD 20 per person per week
  • Sagarmatha National Park (if continuing to Khumbu): NPR 3,000 per person
  • Khumbu Rural Municipality fee: NPR 2,000 per person

Lapche trekking does not allow independent travel, an authorised local agency must handle it. We organise all paperwork for you. For the wider context, see our Nepal trekking permits and costs guide.

What you will see along the way

This region is rich in sacred and natural landmarks:

  • Gaurishankar Himal (7,134 m): a sacred peak the Sherpa call Jomo Tseringma, honoured by Hindus as a form of the goddess Parvati. Visible from Kathmandu despite being 100 km away.
  • Tsho Rolpa Lake (4,580 m): one of Nepal's largest glacial lakes, growing each year as glaciers melt, and fitted with an early-warning flood system for downstream villages.
  • Lapche Gompa (Chora Ghephelling Monastery): a Drigung Kagyu monastery framed by three guardian peaks, with retreat caves above where the great yogi Milarepa is said to have meditated.
  • Bigu Gompa: a nunnery founded in 1934, rebuilt in 2017 after the 2015 earthquake, home to around 60-65 nuns.
  • Dolakha Bhimsen Temple, Kalinchowk, Sailung Hills and Jiri: cultural and viewpoint highlights you can fold into the journey.

The trek options

The beauty of Gaurishankar is choice, from gentle valley walks to serious pass crossings.

Rolwaling Valley Trek — Easy to moderate, around 10 days, max 3,730 m, no high pass required. The classic introduction to the region.

Tsho Rolpa Trek — Easy to moderate, 3-10 days depending on the approach, focused on reaching the great glacial lake.

Bigu Gompa Trek — Moderate to hard, around 6 days, max 3,317 m, built around a peaceful nunnery and very quiet trails.

Lapche Valley Trek — Moderate to strenuous, around 8 days, max 4,600 m, a pilgrimage to the sacred Milarepa hermitage. Requires the Dolakha restricted permit.

Tashi Lapcha Pass Trek — A serious 15-day crossing over the 5,755 m pass into Khumbu, for experienced, well-equipped trekkers only.

Sample itinerary: Rolwaling Valley (9-10 days)

  • Day 1: Kathmandu to Jagat (1,150 m)
  • Day 2: Jagat to Simigaun (2,020 m)
  • Day 3: Simigaun to Dongang (2,790 m)
  • Day 4: Dongang to Bedding (3,700 m)
  • Day 5: Acclimatisation at Bedding
  • Day 6: Bedding to Na (4,200 m)
  • Day 7: Side trek to Tsho Rolpa (4,500 m)
  • Day 8: Return to Dongang (2,790 m)
  • Day 9: Dongang to Gongar Khola (1,430 m)
  • Day 10: Drive to Kathmandu

Trekking peaks for the ambitious

Two peaks above Na village extend the adventure for climbers: Ramdung Go (5,925 m), with panoramas from Everest to Langtang, and Parchamo (6,187 m), usually combined with the Tashi Lapcha crossing into Khumbu. Both need a longer 17-20 day window and proper mountaineering preparation.

Costs

Rolwaling stays affordable because roughly 80% of the route now has teahouse coverage and the restricted permits are economical.

  • Local bus (round trip): around USD 16
  • Gaurishankar permit: USD 30
  • Dolakha restricted permit (weekly): USD 20
  • Guide daily rate: USD 30-40
  • Teahouse room: USD 5-10 per night
  • Daily meals: USD 25-35

A fully organised camping section runs higher per person but buys you superior service and remote-area logistics. Full packages typically land around USD 800-1,000 per person.

Accommodation: teahouse or camping

Lower villages such as Simigaon, Dongang, Beding and Na have basic lodges and homestays. Higher and more technical sections, especially Tashi Lapcha, need camping with pack animals carrying gear, plus a guide, cook and crew. Lapche Valley trekkers often stay at the monastery itself. Internet and mobile coverage are very limited throughout.

Best season

Spring (mid-March to May) and autumn (mid-September to November) are ideal, expect roughly 15°C by day dropping to -10°C or colder at night up high. Winter is bitter and summer monsoon makes the trails treacherous, particularly between Lama Bagar and Lumnang.

Essential tips

  • Carry comprehensive travel insurance that covers helicopter rescue.
  • Keep your daypack stocked, porters often travel separately.
  • Acclimatise carefully above 4,000 m and keep the itinerary flexible.
  • Never trek without permits, checkpoints enforce them strictly.
  • Hire experienced local guides with real ties to these communities.

Walk the valleys before the world arrives
