Best Day Hikes in and Around Kathmandu Valley
Ten best day hikes around Kathmandu Valley with distances, difficulty, mountain views and how to get there, from our Kathmandu-based guides.
Best Day Hikes in and Around Kathmandu Valley
Most visitors think of Kathmandu as the airport you fly into before disappearing onto a serious trek. We tell our guests the opposite. The hills ringing Kathmandu Valley contain some of the best day hikes in the country: forested ridges with mountain views from Annapurna to Everest, sacred monasteries, Newar villages, and easy access from any hotel in Thamel. Whether you have one day to acclimatise before your big trek or two weeks of cultural travel in the valley, there is a trail here that fits. Here are our ten favourite hikes, all reachable in under two hours from central Kathmandu.
1. Shivapuri Peak
The full-day classic just outside the city. Start from Budhanilkantha at the north edge of Kathmandu, climb through Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park, and reach the 2,732 m summit and the small shrine dedicated to Shivapuri Baba. The park is home to over 300 bird species plus deer, wild boar and the occasional Himalayan bear. On clear winter mornings you get Langtang and Ganesh Himal lined up on the horizon.
- Distance: 12-14 km return
- Duration: 6-8 hrs
- Difficulty: moderate
- Permit: Shivapuri National Park NPR 100

2. Dhap Dam
A shorter alternative inside the same national park, ending at an engineered water-conservation dam at 2,100 m. The dam stores monsoon rainfall and releases it slowly into the Bagmati through the dry season. The hike threads through pine forest, small Tamang and Brahmin villages, and crystal-clear stream crossings. Often used as a half-day taster or as the first leg of a Chisopani trek.
- Duration: 4-5 hrs
- Difficulty: easy to moderate

3. Phulchowki
The highest peak around Kathmandu Valley at 2,782 m. The name means "flower house," after the wildflowers that carpet the upper slopes in spring. From the summit on a clear day you can see Everest, Langtang, Ganesh Himal, Gaurishankar, Manaslu and the Annapurnas — possibly the best single panorama within an hour's drive of Kathmandu. The forest supports roughly 300 bird species and 100 butterflies. There is a Hindu temple and a military installation at the top.
- Distance: 14 km return
- Duration: 6-7 hrs
- Difficulty: moderate to challenging
- Access: drive to Godavari, hike from there

4. Nagarjun & Jamacho Gomba
A popular weekend hike just north-west of the city, climbing through oak and rhododendron forest to the Jamacho monastery at 2,095 m. The peak is named after the great Buddhist philosopher Acharya Nagarjuna. Well-marked trail, prayer flags at the summit, and views of Langtang, Ganesh Himal and Manaslu.
- Duration: 4-5 hrs
- Difficulty: easy to moderate
- Permit: Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park NPR 100
5. Namobuddha to Balthali Village
Start at the sacred Buddhist site where legend holds the Buddha (in a previous life) offered his own body to a starving tiger and her cubs. From the monastery, the trail descends through Newar and Tamang settlements to the village of Balthali. Terraced rice fields, suspension bridges, and a slow rural Nepal you do not see from Kathmandu streets. Extension to Panauti, the "town of 40 temples," is possible for energetic walkers.
- Duration: 4-5 hrs
- Difficulty: easy to moderate
6. Chandragiri to Champa Devi
Chandragiri Hill (2,551 m) is where King Prithivi Narayan Shah first surveyed Kathmandu Valley before his 18th-century conquest. Today a cable car takes you up; we recommend walking. The ridge trail through dense pine and rhododendron connects to the sacred Champa Devi temple, ending near Taudaha Lake. On clear days, the Annapurnas, Manaslu, Ganesh Himal, Langtang and even Everest are visible.
- Duration: 5-6 hrs
- Difficulty: moderate
7. Chisapani-Nagarkot Trek (2 days)
The classic two-day hike from the valley's north to its east. "Chisapani" means cold water. Start at Sundarijal, hike past Dhap Dam, sleep overnight at Chisapani in a simple guesthouse, then continue across the ridges to Nagarkot, Nepal's most famous hill station, the next day. Sunrise from either Chisapani or Nagarkot is the headline view. Our 2-day Chisopani Hike is the cleanest way to do this.
- Duration: 2 days
- Difficulty: easy to moderate
- Best for: acclimatisation before a bigger trek
8. Nagarkot Sunrise with Changunarayan
Drive up to Nagarkot the evening before, sleep, wake before dawn for sunrise over the eastern Himalaya, then hike down to Changunarayan Temple — a UNESCO World Heritage site holding Nepal's oldest stone inscriptions. The descent crosses terraced farmland and forested ridges. Easy and culturally rich.
- Duration: 3-4 hrs (downhill)
- Difficulty: easy
- Best for: travellers wanting culture + sunrise without big effort
9. Sankhu to Nagarkot
A longer hike from the historic Newar town of Sankhu, home to two important Hindu temples (Bajrayogini and Swasthani), up to Nagarkot. The route climbs through terraced fields, pine forest and rural villages with views expanding as you gain elevation. Less trodden than the Chisapani route.
- Duration: 6-7 hrs
- Difficulty: moderate
10. Dhulikhel - Namobuddha - Panauti
A triple-cultural-destination loop east of Kathmandu. Dhulikhel is a quiet Newar hill town with Himalaya views. From there, hike 3-3.5 hrs through pine forest to Namobuddha and its monastery complex. Descend toward Panauti to finish at the well-preserved medieval temples and wooden architecture. One of the best day hikes for culture lovers.
- Duration: 6-7 hrs
- Difficulty: moderate
Best season for Kathmandu Valley hiking
- Spring (March-May): wildflowers, clear visibility, occasional afternoon cloud
- Summer (June-August): terraced fields turn emerald, monsoon brings rain showers
- Late monsoon to early autumn (Sept-Oct): lush green hills, the clearest mountain views of the year, fewer crowds
- Winter (November-February): crisp clear skies, snow-capped peaks, morning frost, the best Himalayan views from Phulchowki and Chandragiri
What to pack for a Kathmandu day hike
Lighter than you would think:
- 1-2 litres of water
- Trail snacks (energy bars, biscuits)
- Sun hat, sunblock, sunglasses
- Light rain jacket (any season)
- Sturdy walking shoes (sneakers fine for most routes)
- Cash for park permits (NPR 100-500) and tea-house snacks
- Camera or phone
Why hike around Kathmandu before your big trek
Three good reasons we recommend a day hike to every guest before they head to the mountains:
- Pre-acclimatisation. Spending a day at 2,500-2,800 m starts your altitude adjustment.
- Gear shakedown. Test boots, daypack, layers on real terrain before you commit to a two-week trek.
- Cultural context. You see Newar, Tamang and Brahmin villages and temples that put the urban Kathmandu experience in perspective.
