Kalinchowk: Nepal's Easiest Winter Snow Escape from Kathmandu
Kalinchowk Bhagwati trip guide: how to reach the snowy 3,842 m sacred peak from Kathmandu in 2 days by jeep, cable car or short hike.
Kalinchowk: Nepal's Easiest Winter Snow Escape from Kathmandu
If you want to see snow in Nepal without committing to a serious high-altitude trek, Kalinchowk is the answer. The sacred peak of Kalinchowk Bhagwati sits at 3,842 metres in Dolakha district, roughly 150 km from Kathmandu. A cable car now reaches near the summit, the road runs well-paved most of the way, and you can do the whole trip in two days from a Thamel hotel. Add the sunrise over Langtang, Gauri Shankar and Shisha Pangma from the temple platform, and it is one of the best short escapes in the country.
Where Kalinchowk sits
Kalinchowk Bhagwati Temple crowns a sacred hill in Dolakha district, north-east of Kathmandu. The temple is one of the most important Bhagwati shrines in Nepal, drawing both Hindu pilgrims and increasing numbers of domestic and international travellers who come for the snow and the mountain panorama.

How to get there
The standard itinerary is two days, with one overnight stop in Charikot or Kuri village.
Day 1: Kathmandu to Charikot
- 5-6 hours' drive from Kathmandu
- Route follows the Bhotekoshi river valley with stops at Sukute Beach for lunch
- Arrive Charikot mid-afternoon, check into hotel
- Charikot is the headquarters of Dolakha district, with the historic Dolakha Bhimsen temple just outside town
- Evenings get cold — a hotel with a campfire option is a nice plus
Day 2: Kalinchowk Summit and Return
- Pre-dawn jeep transfer from Charikot to Kuri village (1.5 hours off-road)
- Arrive Kuri by 6:30 am for sunrise over the snow-covered village and surrounding hills
- Breakfast at a Kuri village lodge
- One-hour hike (or 5-minute cable car ride) to Kalinchowk Bhagwati Temple at the summit
- Mountain panorama: Langtang Himal, Ganesh Himal, Gauri Shankar, Jugal Himal, Shisha Pangma (in Tibet), Dorje Lakpa
- Descend to Kuri, optional snow play, drive back to Charikot then Kathmandu
Total trip: 2 days, 1 night. Can be done as a 3-day trip with an extra night at Kuri village for late afternoon and evening time at the summit.

How to reach the summit: three options
1. Cable car. Recently installed, runs from Kuri village to near the temple in about 5 minutes. The easiest option for travellers with mobility limits, families with kids, or those short on time.
2. Hike. Roughly 1 hour from Kuri to the temple, climbing about 300 vertical metres. Steep in places, especially with fresh snow. Proper grip shoes are essential.
3. Private 4x4 with chains. Some jeeps can drive nearly to the summit when conditions allow, with chains fitted on the tyres for snow.

What to pack
For a winter Kalinchowk trip (December to February):
- Warm insulated jacket (down or synthetic)
- Waterproof outer shell
- Hat, gloves, thermal layers
- Sturdy hiking boots with aggressive grip (snow on the trail is slippery)
- Sunglasses (the snow glare at altitude is fierce)
- Sunblock and lip balm
- Small daypack
- Camera, spare batteries (batteries die fast in cold)
- Basic altitude meds (some visitors do feel mild altitude effects at 3,842 m)
- Cash for cable car (NPR 800-1,500 round trip) and meals
For shoulder-season (October-November, March-April), drop the down jacket and add a light rain shell.
What you see from the summit
Kalinchowk gives you one of the best mountain panoramas in the country for the lowest effort. On a clear morning the visible peaks include:
- Langtang Himal range to the west
- Ganesh Himal further west
- Gauri Shankar (7,134 m) directly north — sacred to both Hindus and Buddhists
- Jugal Himal range
- Shisha Pangma (8,027 m) across the border in Tibet — the only 8,000 m peak entirely inside Tibet
- Dorje Lakpa (6,966 m) to the north-east
Sunrise gives the cleanest views. By mid-morning cloud often starts to build.
Why Kalinchowk works for so many travellers
Five reasons we put this on our short-trip list for guests:
-
Snow without trekking. Most snow experiences in Nepal require a multi-day trek to a high lodge. Kalinchowk gives you snow at the summit in winter without climbing technique or serious altitude exposure.
-
Two days from Thamel. Reachable on a weekend without disrupting any larger itinerary.
-
Family-friendly. With the cable car option, anyone from school-age kids to grandparents can reach the summit.
-
Cultural depth. The Bhagwati temple is genuinely sacred and busy with domestic Nepali pilgrims, especially during festivals — you experience local religious practice, not a stage set.
-
Skiing and tobogganing potential. Kuri village's slopes offer snow play and sledding in winter. The infrastructure for proper skiing is still developing but the potential is real.
A note on stargazing
The elevation and absence of city lights make Kuri village one of the better stargazing spots within easy reach of Kathmandu. On clear nights you can also see the lights of Kathmandu Valley glowing far below — a slightly surreal view that captures Nepal's geographic compression in one image.
Best season
- December to February: the snow season — what most visitors come for
- October-November: clear skies, no snow, easier walking, peak Hindu pilgrimage season
- March to May: rhododendrons in bloom on the approach, mild temperatures
- June to September: rainy, often cloudy, generally avoided
Combine with other Kathmandu Valley trips
Kalinchowk pairs nicely with:
- A standard cultural sightseeing day around Bhaktapur or Patan
- A day hike in the Kathmandu Valley such as Chandragiri or Phulchowki
- A Helambu trek extension if you want to push deeper into the mountains
