Ama Yangri Peak: A 3-Day Hike From Kathmandu with Big Mountain Views
Ama Yangri Peak hike from Kathmandu: 3-day itinerary, route via Tarkeghyang, what to pack, and Himalayan views from the highest peak near the valley.
Ama Yangri Peak: A 3-Day Hike From Kathmandu with Big Mountain Views
Ama Yangri Peak is one of the best-kept secrets in trekking near Kathmandu. The summit at 3,771 metres is the highest peak around Kathmandu Valley, with a 360-degree view of the eastern, central and western Himalaya — Everest, Langtang, Gaurishankar, Dorje Lhakpa, Annapurna and Manaslu on a clear day — and you can reach it in three days from your hotel in Thamel. Most trekkers fly past it on their way to the famous routes. We think it deserves more attention.
Where it is
Ama Yangri sits roughly 75 kilometres north-east of Kathmandu Valley in the Helambu region of Sindhupalchowk district. The peak rises above the Hyolmo (Yolmo) village of Tarkeghyang inside Langtang National Park. It is sacred to the local Hyolmo Buddhist community, who treat the summit as a protector deity for the valleys below.

The 3-day itinerary
This is the standard schedule we run.
Day 1: Kathmandu to Tarkeghyang
Bus from Chabahil in Kathmandu to Melamchi Bazaar (4-5 hours), then another local bus through Timbu to Tarkeghyang (2,560 m). Only one bus per day runs the Melamchi-Tarkeghyang route, so timing matters. Tarkeghyang itself is a beautiful traditional Yolmo village with old chortens, prayer wheels and stone-paved alleys. Spend the afternoon exploring the village and resting for the early start.
Day 2: Summit Day
Pre-dawn start. The trail climbs roughly 1,200 metres from Tarkeghyang to the summit — approximately 5 hours of steady ascent through pine and oak forest, then alpine meadow, then exposed ridge. Prayer flags mark the summit. On a clear morning you can see Everest, the entire Langtang range, Gaurishankar, Dorje Lhakpa, parts of the Annapurnas and Manaslu. Allow plenty of time for photos. Descent back to Tarkeghyang takes 3-4 hours. Total day: 8-9 hours of walking.
Day 3: Return to Kathmandu
Trek down to Timbu (or take the bus if running), then bus to Melamchi Bazaar, then on to Chabahil in Kathmandu. Arrive back in the city by afternoon.
Alternative starting point: from Sankhu on the eastern edge of Kathmandu Valley, with a longer first day of walking.

How hard is it
Moderate. The trek is short and altitude is manageable (max 3,771 m, well below the danger zone for serious altitude sickness for most people), but the summit day is steep and includes slippery sections that demand proper footwear. Anyone in reasonable fitness can complete it. The trail is well-marked and used regularly by domestic trekkers and pilgrims.

What to pack
For a 3-day Ama Yangri hike:
- Sturdy walking shoes or trekking boots with good grip
- Lightweight daypack (15-25 L)
- 1.5 litres of water minimum (refill at Tarkeghyang)
- Energy bars, dried fruit, dark chocolate, biscuits
- Windproof jacket
- Fleece or thermal mid-layer
- Down jacket for winter trips (December-February)
- Sun hat, sunglasses, sunblock
- Lip balm
- Head torch for the pre-dawn summit start
- Trekking poles (helpful for the steep descent)
- Basic first-aid kit (plasters, ibuprofen, blister patches)
- Cash for buses and meals (NPR 1,500-2,500 per day)
- ID for park entry
If you are camping rather than using the Tarkeghyang lodge:
- Tent
- Sleeping bag rated to -5°C minimum
- Sleeping mat
- Stove and small fuel canister
- Headlamp with spare batteries
Best season
Autumn (September to November) is the optimal window — clearest skies, mildest temperatures, and the summit views are at their best. Spring (March to May) also works well, with the rhododendrons in bloom lower down. Winter is possible but cold and snow-prone. Monsoon (June-August) sees reduced visibility, slippery trails, and buses sometimes terminate at Timbu rather than continuing to Tarkeghyang.
Permits
You will need a Langtang National Park entry permit (NPR 3,000 for foreigners) and TIMS card if you arrange the trek through an agency. Day-hiking domestic trekkers often pay only the park entry. Either way, carry your passport.
Who hikes Ama Yangri
Traditionally, the trail has been walked mostly by domestic trekkers from Kathmandu and members of the Sherpa, Tamang, Chhetri and Hyolmo communities, plus religious pilgrims. International trekkers are still a minority on this trail, which is part of what makes it so rewarding — you get a serious Himalayan summit experience without the cattle-class queues of the bigger routes.
Why we recommend it
Four reasons:
- Big views, small commitment. Three days from Kathmandu to a 360-degree Himalayan panorama is unbeatable value for time-constrained visitors.
- No domestic flight. All transport is road-based, eliminating Lukla-style cancellation risk.
- Authentic Yolmo culture. Tarkeghyang and the surrounding villages are working Hyolmo Buddhist communities, not stage sets.
- Perfect pre-trek acclimatisation. The 3,771 m summit primes you nicely for a bigger trek in the days following.
What to combine it with
Ama Yangri works as either a standalone short trek or a warm-up before a bigger Himalayan trip. Natural follow-ons:
- Langtang Valley: Continue west into the Langtang Valley Classical Trek
- Helambu loop: Extend south into the Helambu region for another 5-6 days
- Gosainkunda Lakes: Cross over to the sacred Gosainkunda lakes — about 4-5 extra days
If you have only a week in Nepal and want to see real mountains, Ama Yangri is one of the best routes to take.
