12 Best Treks in Nepal for 2026: A Local Guide's Honest Ranking
Our Kathmandu-based guides rank Nepal's 12 best treks for 2026, from iconic Everest to hidden Tsum Valley, with seasons, permits and difficulty.
12 Best Treks in Nepal for 2026: A Local Guide's Honest Ranking
Choosing the right trek in Nepal is the difference between a holiday you tell stories about for the rest of your life and one you grit through. As a small Kathmandu-based outfit run by senior Nepali guides, we get this question every week: which trek should I do first? Below is our honest 2026 ranking of the twelve best treks in Nepal, sorted by what our guests actually rave about after they get home, not by what marketing departments push. Whether you have five days, three weeks, or a once-in-a-lifetime month to spare, there is a route here with your name on it.
How we chose these twelve
We are not interested in clickbait listicles that mix up easy weekend hikes with serious mountaineering. Every trek below is a multi-day journey on a real Himalayan trail, with proper teahouse infrastructure or organised camping, and a sensible permit pathway. We weighted three things heavily: scenery you cannot find anywhere else on earth, cultural depth, and how well the route holds up against modern crowding. Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) are the two windows we recommend across the board, so we have flagged exceptions only.

1. Everest Base Camp Trek
Of course it is on the list. Standing at 5,364 metres at the foot of the world's highest mountain is still one of the most emotional moments in trekking, and the 14-16 day approach through Sagarmatha National Park gives you suspension bridges, Sherpa heartland villages like Tengboche and Dingboche, and ancient Buddhist monasteries that pre-date the climbing era. Add a sunrise side trip to Kala Patthar (5,644 m) for the postcard view of Everest itself.
- Best season: March to May and October to December
- Permits: Sagarmatha National Park entry, Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality fee
- Difficulty: Moderate to challenging

2. Annapurna Base Camp Trek
The Annapurna Sanctuary delivers a 360-degree amphitheatre of giants: Annapurna I, Machapuchhre, Hiunchuli and Nilgiri all crowd in around you at 4,130 m. The trail climbs gradually through Gurung villages, rhododendron forests and bamboo groves, making it one of the most beginner-friendly high treks in the country. Our standard Annapurna Base Camp Trek does this in six tight days, while families and slower walkers should add the combined Ghorepani Poon Hill and ABC route.
- Best season: February to May
- Permits: ACAP, TIMS

3. Manaslu Circuit Trek
The eighth-highest peak in the world, a high pass at 5,160 metres, ancient Tibetan-flavoured villages, and a fraction of the foot traffic of Annapurna. The Manaslu Circuit is where serious trekkers go now that the classic Annapurna Circuit has been carved up by roads. Crossing Larkya La on day eleven is unforgettable. We run a luxury Manaslu Circuit Trek for guests who want comfort at the end of long days.
- Best season: March-May and September-November
- Permits: Restricted Area Permit, MCAP, ACAP
4. Langtang Valley Trek
Just sixty kilometres north of Kathmandu, Langtang is the closest serious trek to the capital. The valley was rebuilt after the 2015 earthquake with extraordinary resilience, and trekking here directly supports that recovery. Expect Langtang Lirung at 7,227 metres, Tamang villages, yak cheese factories, and Kyanjin Gompa at 3,800 m. Our Langtang Valley Classical Trek takes eleven days at a comfortable pace.
- Best season: Spring and autumn
- Permits: Langtang National Park, TIMS
5. Upper Mustang Trek
The former forbidden kingdom is the closest you can get to old Tibet without crossing the border. Red sandstone cliffs, sky caves, ochre monasteries and the walled city of Lo Manthang make this the most culturally rich trek in Nepal. If you can time your visit to coincide with Tiji Festival in Upper Mustang, do it. For a slower exploration there is also the Upper Mustang Apple Farm Trek.
- Best season: March to November (dry rainshadow region)
- Permits: USD 500 special permit plus ACAP
6. Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek
The classic short trek and the easiest entry point into the Annapurna foothills. Five days, two villages, one ridiculous sunrise from Poon Hill at 3,210 m with Dhaulagiri, the Annapurnas and Machapuchhre lined up like a guard of honour. Perfect for families, first-timers, or anyone short on time before flying home.
- Best season: November-January for snow; March-May for blooms
- Permits: ACAP, TIMS
7. Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek
Far east on the Indian border, Kanchenjunga is the world's third-highest peak and easily Nepal's most remote major trekking objective. The circuit visits both north and south base camps, drops through subtropical jungle and climbs to high glaciers. Snow leopard and red panda habitat. Allow 18-24 days and serious fitness.
- Best season: Late March-May and September-mid November
- Permits: Restricted Area Permit, KCAP
8. Upper Dolpo Trek
The trans-Himalayan rainshadow valleys of Dolpo are what Peter Matthiessen wrote The Snow Leopard about. Ancient salt-trade routes, turquoise Phoksundo Lake, old Bon and Buddhist monasteries, and dry rugged landscape stretching toward the Tibetan plateau. This is one of our favourite expeditions for veteran trekkers who want true wilderness.
- Best season: April to mid-November (autumn ideal)
- Permits: USD 500 for first 10 days then USD 50/day, plus Shey Phoksundo NP
9. Tsum Valley Trek
A sacred hidden valley tucked behind Manaslu, only opened to outsiders in 2008. The Tsumpa people are ethnically Tibetan, deeply Buddhist, and live under a 100-year-old non-violence pact called Shyagya. Mu Gompa, Rachen Gompa, and Milarepa's meditation cave are highlights. We are specialists here: see our Tsum Valley Classical Trek, the longer whole valley trek, or the combined Tsum and Manaslu Circuit.
- Best season: Spring and autumn
- Permits: Tsum Valley RAP, MCAP
10. Mardi Himal Trek
A short, sweet alternative to the busier Annapurna trails. Starting near Pokhara, the route climbs through moss-draped forest to High Camp at 3,850 m and one of the most intimate close-up views of Machapuchhre in the country. Our Mardi Himal Trek runs seven days, or pair it with ABC in our combined route.
- Best season: Spring and autumn
- Permits: ACAP, TIMS
11. Everest Three Passes Trek
This is the connoisseur's Everest route: Kongma La, Cho La and Renjo La all linked into one big loop that also takes in Base Camp, Gokyo Lake and a half-dozen 8000-metre views. Two and a half weeks of serious high-altitude trekking for fit, experienced walkers.
- Best season: Spring and autumn
- Permits: Sagarmatha NP, Khumbu Rural Municipality
12. Annapurna Circuit via Tilicho Lake
The classic Annapurna Circuit reborn. Crossing Thorong La at 5,476 m and detouring to Tilicho Lake (4,919 m, one of the highest lakes on earth) gives you the full geographic story of the Annapurna massif, from subtropical riverbeds to alpine desert in twenty-one days. Our Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho and Ice Lake is the deluxe version of this route.
- Best season: Autumn and spring
- Permits: ACAP, TIMS
Choosing the right trek for you
Think about three variables before you book: how long you have, how much altitude you can handle, and whether you want crowds and cake at the teahouse or genuine solitude. First-time trekkers usually do well with ABC, Poon Hill, Mardi or Langtang. Returning trekkers should look at Manaslu, Tsum, Upper Mustang or the Three Passes. For true expedition energy, Kanchenjunga and Upper Dolpo are unmatched.
A few practical notes. Daal bhat is the national fuel and will get you up any of these trails. Solo trekking is permitted on standard routes but restricted areas (Mustang, Manaslu, Tsum, Dolpo, Kanchenjunga, Nar Phu) require a minimum of two trekkers and a licensed agency. Spring and autumn book out, so we recommend locking in five to six months ahead for the popular routes.
