17 Best Himalayan Viewpoints in Nepal (Ranked by Local Guides)

Seventeen best Himalayan viewpoints in Nepal ranked by our guides: Kala Pathar, Gokyo Ri, Poon Hill, Pikey Peak, Mardi, Khopra and more.

17 Best Himalayan Viewpoints in Nepal (Ranked by Local Guides)

There is a particular kind of moment that defines a Himalayan trek: standing on a ridge at sunrise, prayer flags snapping in the wind, watching the first light hit the highest mountains on earth. Nepal has dozens of these viewpoints, and not all of them are created equal. Some demand a 12-day commitment, others a 30-minute drive from your Pokhara hotel. Here are seventeen of the best, ranked by our senior guides and grouped by region.

Everest region

1. Kala Pathar (5,545 m)

The most famous viewpoint in Nepal. The black-rock ridge above Gorak Shep, climbed at sunrise, gives the cleanest unobstructed view of Mount Everest itself — better than EBC, where the mountain is partially hidden. Also visible: Nuptse, Pumori, Lingtren, Khumbutse. 10-12 day commitment via the standard EBC trek.

2. Gokyo Ri (5,357 m)

Many guides quietly prefer Gokyo Ri over Kala Pathar. From the summit you get a 360-degree panorama of four of the world's highest mountains in one sweep: Everest (8,849 m), Lhotse (8,516 m), Makalu (8,485 m) and Cho Oyu (8,188 m). Plus turquoise glacial lakes below and the Ngozumpa Glacier — Nepal's longest. 8-13 day trek from Lukla.

3. Pikey Peak (4,065 m)

Sir Edmund Hillary's personal favourite Everest viewpoint. From the summit you see Everest and 40+ other peaks. Crucially, Pikey is only 4,065 m and reachable in a 7-9 day trek from Kathmandu with minimal permit hassle. Our top recommendation for trekkers wanting an Everest view without the EBC commitment.

4. Nangkartshang Peak (5,083 m)

An excellent acclimatisation hike above Dingboche on the EBC route. 5-7 hours up and down, with 360-degree views of Makalu (8,485 m), Lhotse (8,516 m), Ama Dablam (6,812 m) and Island Peak (6,189 m). One of the best "free" viewpoints if you are doing EBC anyway.

5. Everest View Hotel (3,880 m)

Built in 1971 above Namche Bazaar, this is one of the highest hotels in the world. Just 1-2 hours hiking from Namche, it serves coffee and cake with one of the great views of the Himalaya. Combines luxury with mountain proximity. Best as a day trip during an EBC acclimatisation stop.

Annapurna region

6. Poon Hill (3,210 m)

The most accessible iconic viewpoint in Nepal. Sunrise from the summit gives you the full Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges in panorama. Rhododendrons bloom spectacularly through March-April. 5-day round trip from Pokhara via the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek. Perfect first trek.

7. Sarangkot (1,529 m)

Near Pokhara. 360-degree views of the Annapurna range, Pokhara Valley and Phewa Lake. 30-45 minutes by car from the city centre. The easiest way in Nepal to see a Himalayan sunrise.

8. Manungkot (1,080 m)

Damauli's emerging answer to Sarangkot. Same Annapurna views, far fewer crowds. The "cloud sea" sunrise here lasts until about 8 am, which makes it more rewarding for people who are not happy at 4:30 am alarms.

9. Muldai Viewpoint (3,637 m)

427 metres higher than Poon Hill, with a wider mountain perspective. No commercial infrastructure — just prayer flags and a natural trail. The trade-off for a longer trek (8-10 days) is genuine solitude.

10. Khopra Ridge (3,660 m)

Close-up views of both the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri massifs from a high ridge position. Community-run lodges along the route. 10-12 day trek including the sacred Khayer Lake (4,660 m). Our Khopra Danda Trek and the extended version cover this route.

11. Mardi Himal (4,500 m)

The best alternative to a crowded Annapurna Sanctuary trek. Opened to international tourists in 2012. Well-maintained trails through rhododendron and oak forest, ending at a close-up view of Machapuchhre (Fishtail). 5-7 days via our Mardi Himal Trek or combined with ABC.

12. Mohare Danda (3,300 m)

A community-based sustainable tourism trek through villages like Nangi and Mohare, with mountain panoramas to rival Poon Hill. 4-6 days. Recommended for travellers who want their trekking budget to flow directly into village economies.

Langtang region

13. Kyanjin Ri (4,773 m)

Above Kyanjin Gompa at the head of Langtang Valley, this is the most accessible high viewpoint in the region. 3-4 hour summit climb from the lodges with grazing yaks and prayer flags along the way. Our Langtang Valley Classical Trek includes this side trip.

14. Tsergo Ri (4,984 m)

Higher and longer than Kyanjin Ri (6-8 hour round trip), with arguably the most spectacular panorama in all of Langtang National Park. Best in spring and summer; winter brings heavy snow.

15. Nagthali (3,165 m)

A quieter hilltop viewpoint in the Langtang-Gosainkunda region, often added as a side trek during a Tamang Heritage Trek. 2-3 days from Syabrubesi through ancient villages with locally-run lodges.

Kanchenjunga region

16. Drohmo Ri (6,100 m)

Above Pangpema (Kanchenjunga North Base Camp), Drohmo Ri is a non-technical 6,000 m acclimatisation peak that holds spiritual significance for the local Buddhist community. 2-3 hour ascent. The view across the Kanchenjunga massif from here is mountaineering-grade without requiring mountaineering technique. Note: do not confuse Drohmo Ri (6,100 m) with Drohmo Peak (6,881 m), which is a technical climb.

Kathmandu Valley

17. Nagarkot (2,175 m)

The most accessible viewpoint from Kathmandu. 1.5 hours' drive from the capital. On a clear day you can see 8 of the 13 Himalayan ranges visible from anywhere in Nepal. Excellent for travellers with one or two days in the country who still want a Himalayan sunrise.

How to choose your viewpoint

By time available:

  • One day: Sarangkot, Manungkot, Nagarkot
  • 5-7 days: Poon Hill, Mardi Himal, Pikey Peak, Mohare Danda
  • 10-14 days: EBC + Kala Pathar, Gokyo Ri, Khopra Ridge
  • 17+ days: Full Everest Three Passes, Kanchenjunga Drohmo Ri

By difficulty:

  • Easy: Sarangkot, Nagarkot, Manungkot, Everest View Hotel
  • Moderate: Poon Hill, Pikey, Mardi, Mohare, Nagthali
  • Strenuous: Kala Pathar, Gokyo Ri, Tsergo Ri, Drohmo Ri

By view quality:

  • Best Everest: Pikey (low altitude), Gokyo Ri (mid-altitude), Kala Pathar (highest)
  • Best Annapurna sunrise: Poon Hill, Sarangkot
  • Best 360-degree panorama: Gokyo Ri
  • Best off-beat: Drohmo Ri, Khopra Ridge, Muldai

Practical notes for viewpoint trekking

  • Mountain views are clearest in early morning (before 9 am) and just before sunset
  • Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) deliver the highest hit-rate for clear skies
  • Winter at lower-altitude viewpoints (Sarangkot, Nagarkot, Pikey) actually gives the most reliable clear views, though it is cold
  • Bring a head torch for the pre-dawn climb to any of the higher viewpoints
  • Sunglasses with category-4 lenses if you are climbing through snow
  • A decent camera or phone with a wide-angle lens — these panoramas are not the same on a normal lens
