6 Least-Trekked Places in Nepal Worth Going to in 2026
Six off-the-beaten-path Nepal treks for 2026: Tsum, Nar Phu, Dolpo, Kanchenjunga, Gosainkunda-Helambu and Pikey Peak. Less crowded alternatives.
6 Least-Trekked Places in Nepal Worth Going to in 2026
Everest Base Camp and the Annapurna Circuit are spectacular, and they are also crowded. If you have already done one of the famous routes, or if the thought of queuing for sunrise behind 80 other trekkers fills you with dread, Nepal still has plenty of trails where you can walk for days without seeing another foreign face. These six are our favourites — all genuinely remarkable, all genuinely under-visited.
1. Tsum Valley
Tsum Valley sits in the Manaslu region of northern Gorkha, tucked behind Boudha Himal and Ganesh Himal. The valley only opened to international tourists in 2007, and even today sees a fraction of the foot traffic of its larger neighbour Manaslu. The Tsumpa people are ethnically Tibetan and practise a distinctive form of Buddhism centred on a 100-year-old non-violence pact called Shyagya.
Highlights:
- Ancient monasteries: Mu Gompa, Panago Gompa, Gurwa Gompa
- Milarepa's Piren Phu cave, sacred to Tibetan Buddhism
- Mountain views of Ganesh Himal and Sringi Himal
- Diverse wildlife including grey langurs and kalij pheasants
- Authentic cultural encounters with the Tsumpa community
Duration: 13-18 days. See our Tsum Valley Classical Trek or the longer whole-valley trek.
Best season: Spring (March-May), autumn (September-November).

2. Nar Phu Valley
Tucked north-east of the Annapurna Circuit's Thorong La pass, the Nar Phu Valley remained closed to outsiders until 2002 and still requires a USD 100/week restricted permit. The valley is home to traditional Tibetan-speaking villages, ancient Bon and Buddhist monasteries, and the dramatic high crossing of Kang La pass at 5,306 m.
Highlights:
- Mesokanto La or Kang La pass crossings (both above 5,000 m)
- Genuine wilderness with very few other trekkers
- Views of Annapurna II, Dhaulagiri, Gangapurna
- Tibetan-speaking villages of Nar and Phu maintaining ancient lifestyles
- Spring rhododendron forests at lower elevations
Duration: 21 days as a combined Annapurna Circuit with Nar Phu Trek.
Best season: Spring, autumn (high passes can be dangerous outside these windows).

3. Dolpo
Opened to foreigners in 1980 and made internationally famous by Eric Valli's 1999 film Himalaya and Peter Matthiessen's 1979 book The Snow Leopard, Dolpo remains one of the most isolated trekking regions in the country. The Upper Dolpo permit costs USD 500 for 10 days, which keeps numbers down by design.
Highlights:
- Shey Phoksundo Lake, Nepal's deepest at 3,611 m, electric turquoise
- 800-year-old Shey Gompa monastery
- Ringmo village and other untouched Tibetan settlements
- Snow leopard and blue sheep habitat
- Practitioners of both Tibetan Buddhism and pre-Buddhist Bon
Duration: 17-26 days depending on route. See our Phoksundo Tea House Trek for an accessible 11-day option.
Best season: Autumn (September-November) for clearest views; June-August also work due to rain-shadow geography.

4. Kanchenjunga Circuit
Nepal's third-highest peak (8,586 m) sits in the far east of the country on the Indian border, and the circuit covering both its base camps is one of the most remote serious treks in the Himalaya. Opened to foreign trekkers only in 1988, and only by group permit through registered agencies.
Highlights:
- Both north (Pangpema, 5,140 m) and south (Oktong, 4,580 m) base camps
- Genuinely undiscovered cultural contrast between north and south sides
- Snow leopard, red panda and blue sheep habitat
- Diverse ecosystems from subtropical jungle to high glaciers
- Sherpa, Limbu and Rai communities with unique customs
Duration: 19-24 days.
Best season: Spring (late March-May), autumn (September-November).
5. Gosainkunda-Helambu Trek
The closest serious trekking destination to Kathmandu Valley, with seven sacred glacial lakes at Gosainkunda and the welcoming villages of Helambu, home to the Hyolmo people. The August Janai Purnima festival sees 20,000 Hindu pilgrims travel to Gosainkunda for ritual bathing in the holy lakes.
Highlights:
- Gosainkunda sacred lake at 4,380 m
- Laurebina Pass crossing at 4,610 m
- Hyolmo, Sherpa and Tamang villages
- Helambu region with traditional Hyolmo architecture
- Closest big trek to Kathmandu (no domestic flight required)
Duration: 8-12 days. See our Gosainkunda Circuit Clockwise and Gosainkunda Anticlockwise routes.
Best season: Spring, autumn. Janai Purnima pilgrimage in August adds cultural depth.
6. Pikey Peak
In Ramechhap district in eastern Nepal, Pikey Peak (4,065 m) is famously the favourite Everest viewpoint of Sir Edmund Hillary himself. From the summit you see Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Kanchenjunga and over 30 other named peaks. The trek is short, low-altitude, and remarkably uncrowded compared to its more famous neighbours.
Highlights:
- Edmund Hillary's favourite Everest panorama
- Sherpa cultural experiences and small monasteries
- Rhododendron, pine and bamboo forests
- Excellent introduction to trekking for first-timers
- Tranquil trails with very few other foreign visitors
Duration: 6-7 days from Kathmandu via teahouses.
Best season: Spring (February-May), autumn (September-December).
What these treks share
Three things make these six routes deserve a spot on any serious Nepal-trekker's list:
- Authentic culture. All six pass through communities still living traditional lifestyles, where tourism has not yet remade the local economy.
- Significantly fewer trekkers. Sometimes by an order of magnitude. The Annapurna Circuit sees 30,000+ trekkers per year. Tsum Valley sees a few thousand. Dolpo sees fewer than 1,000.
- Genuine challenge or genuine accessibility. Pikey Peak is one of the easiest Nepal treks. Dolpo and Kanchenjunga are some of the hardest. Both ends of the difficulty spectrum are represented.
How to choose
- Short and easy: Pikey Peak or Helambu
- Mid-length cultural: Tsum Valley, Gosainkunda-Helambu
- High-altitude challenge: Nar Phu with Annapurna Circuit, Kanchenjunga
- Full expedition: Upper Dolpo
Preparation universals
Whatever you choose, all six require:
- Acclimatisation — build rest days into the itinerary for any trek above 3,500 m
- Restricted area permits processed by your agency (where applicable)
- A licensed guide (mandatory for all restricted areas)
- Quality layered clothing, boots, sleeping bag rated for the relevant altitude
- Travel insurance with helicopter evacuation cover
- For shoulder-season departures, weather contingency days
